byetta and lows

Sunday, August 1st, 2004

I’m wondering if an intake of large amounts of glucose is the best response
when a byetta user has a low, by which is meant a real low of under 70 and
not the feelings often experienced when glucose drops from high to more
normal levels. Byetta stimulates glucose when a bg of 90 or so is reached
in the blood. Because there is always variation and a small number on the
margins who are exceptions, levles lower then this for a small minority
will start the insulin.

Here is my thought, in traditional treatment one takes glucose to raise
levels when there has been too much insulin used or a drug which stimulates
it regardless of glucose levels. This glucose then balances the excess of
insulin. In byetta increasing levels by a large jolt of added glucose only
prolongs the output of insulin for a longer time and becomes self
defeating.
