Byetta as a replacement for metformin or glyburide?
Howdy, all. I’m 27 years old, male, overweight (according to BMI, I’m
obese, but I sure don’t look obese…). I’ve been diagnosed T2 since
2003. I’ve got good control of my bg (A1C somewhere in the 6-7
range). The problem is, when I got control of my bg, my weight shot
up. I’m on metformin 1000 mg bid and glyburide 2.5 mg bid.
It was the addition of the glyburide that made my weight
uncontrollable. I went from 235 (a good, trim weight for me) to 280
in less than a year. My diet is not the problem - my calorie intake
is less than 2000 a day, usually less than 1500. I’m not a carb nazi;
That is, I don’t religiously avoid carbs, but I do only indulge in
moderation.
I just can’t drop any pounds. I used to work out, but I got so
frustrated with the lack of impact that it had on my weight that I
quit and eventually cancelled my gym membership.
So I discovered Byetta recently, and I’m considering asking my doc if
she thinks I’d benefit from it. I am so totally willing to switch to
an injectable Rx if it means less frustration in trying to get control
of my weight. Before I do, though, I’d like some input from you all
regarding Byetta in conjunction with metformin and glyburide.
Is there anyone here who uses Byetta by itself, without metformin or
glyburide? Was anyone able to drop one or the other after starting
Byetta?
I know Byetta is not a weight-loss panacea, and I also realize that
since my sugars are under control, sometimes it’s best to leave well
enough alone, but I really feel it’s important to get my weight under
control before I get to the age where I really need to start worrying
about heart problems - like what killed my dad…
Thank you ver much for your input!

Hi,
I’m on Actos, Metformin, Glyburide and Byetta. Since going on the Byetta
I’ve had to significantly lower my glyburide. My A1C last time was 4.6.
I’ve lost more than 30 pounds since Dec, when I started the Byetta. I’m
significantly overweight. I weigh almost 300. The Byetta has really made
a difference. Before I was on it I was taking over 150 units of insulin
per day. Now I’m completely off the insulin. I’m in better control of my
bgs than I ever have been before. I highly recommend Byetta. Even though
I have had some side effects, I am doing better than before. If you have
any questions I would be happy to anser them.
Blessings,
Karen

Hi, Camsoper, and welcome to the list.
I’ve been on Byetta since around Sept and have since dropped the Lantus.
I only use Humalog if I decide to hypercarb, which isn’t very often.
I’ve lost 40#, which is nice! <g> The rest of it is coming off very
slowly, so I’m increasing the exercise.
