Byetta as a replacement for metformin or glyburide?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

Howdy, all. I’m 27 years old, male, overweight (according to BMI, I’m
obese, but I sure don’t look obese…). I’ve been diagnosed T2 since
2003. I’ve got good control of my bg (A1C somewhere in the 6-7
range). The problem is, when I got control of my bg, my weight shot
up. I’m on metformin 1000 mg bid and glyburide 2.5 mg bid.

It was the addition of the glyburide that made my weight
uncontrollable. I went from 235 (a good, trim weight for me) to 280
in less than a year. My diet is not the problem - my calorie intake
is less than 2000 a day, usually less than 1500. I’m not a carb nazi;
That is, I don’t religiously avoid carbs, but I do only indulge in
moderation.

I just can’t drop any pounds. I used to work out, but I got so
frustrated with the lack of impact that it had on my weight that I

Still having the lows…

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

Am I the only one that is having this problem?I have posted a few
times about it with very limited response and I am so frustrated. I
guess I keep hoping that someone out there will help me figure this
out.

My first month on the 5 mcg pen, I had absolutely no nausea or side
effects and lost 10 lbs. My doc switched me to the 10 mcg pen and I
started having readings around 60-70 at least once a day, usually in
the afternoon after lunch. I went back to see him and asked him to
put me back on the 5 with me taking it 3 times a day like some others
here do.

Now I am having lows on the 5, just using it twice a day. This is
just crazy. I am trying to watch what I eat…could I possibly be
eating too little? Not enough carbs? I have only lost 2 more pounds

MY DR. ADVISED ME AGAINST BYETTA

Friday, August 27th, 2004

I have been one of the lucky ones. I have had no bad side effects
from using byetta(knock wood). I did experience a cool phase. I had
been taking byetta for about 2 months. I noticed that I was feeling
cooler. I asked my Dr. about this and he said it might be due to a
redistribution of weight. I have only lost 15 pounds but I am down
almost 2 sizes.
My normal body temp is 97 also. I have always been the one to turn
on the air first. My hubby was always freezing. This year he wanted
to turn the air on first.
When I started on byetta I weighed 305. I am down to between 288 and
290. I am able to walk five blocks to get my morning paper and walk
back without being totally wiped out. I am able to do more around
the house and play outside with my dogs.
I also have fair skin and low tolerance for the heat. It has been
such a blessing to me to be able to spend more time outside and

Doctors and their prescriptions…

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

Did I mention that when tested my DH’s vitamin D level was very deficient. That
was before he started taking 5000 IU a day. I told my doctor I wanted 50,000 IU
monthly. (My test got lost but ya darn well know I’m deficient too). Today I
picked up my script and he got confused and wrote for 50,000 IU a day for a
year. Before he’d flinched at 50,000 IU a month. :)
I gave DH one and I took one today (depth charge!!!) and we’ll see how bad my D
levels are and what it will take to get me to "normal." I know John Dodson
takes 50,000 IU a day.

I hope that the D supplementation (which is supposed to help my insulin
resistance, from what I have read) does the trick. Since finding out all this
good information from John I have gotten my sister on D (she has bad, bad osteo)
and have found out it is good for many other things than diabetes.

Temperature regulation

Sunday, August 22nd, 2004

I’ve recently switched to the 10 pen from the five, even though the
five was doing fine. I seem to overall be doing well on the Byetta
and hope the effect lasts for me.

Anyway, we had the first real heat-wave of the year over the Memorial
Day weekend, and I was outside working. I usually sweat like a pig in
>80 degree F weather, and I was merrily working away at 92F not
realizing how hot it was because I wasn’t sweating.

Anyway, I think I did eventually dehydrate myself, but caught it and
took a break at an appropriate time.

I’ve heard that Byetta makes you "cold" (though I’ve not really
noticed this), but never that it keeps you from sweating.. but in my
case it seems to stop me from sweating nearly as much as in the past.

Has anyone tried this?
Here is a blurb from a site.

It came up when I looked for constipation. No, not me, my husband due to
vicodone for his pain from his kidney stone blasting (lithotripsy)

how to throw a low-carb party

Wednesday, August 18th, 2004

Dan and I had our end of semester party yesterday night. It is amazing how
people love to come and eat and visit and how it can all be done very low carb.

We had a platter of baked mushrooms seasoned with lemon, chipotle pepper,
garlic, onion, and pepper stuffed with garlic herb cheese. These vanished early
and I regretted not making a double batch. We have a friend in the restaurant
business who is starting to inquire about these recipes for her restaurant.

Dan orderered venison summer sausage and speciality cheeses that were thinly
sliced and arranged on a tray. We also had a tray of Boar’s Head cheeses and
some sliced Boar’s Head speciality luncheon meats. We also made a pile of
cheese crackers out of American cheese - which were all gone by the end of the
evening.

There was the vegetable and dip tray of course - the dip being sour

IN TROUBLE

Monday, August 16th, 2004

My doctor told me if I had a boil for 3 days I should come in and have
it taken care of. I trust my doc. a lot. If she says it needs to be
done then I do it. You may want to call you doc. and see what they
say. Susan

PICKED UP RX TODAY

Monday, August 16th, 2004

I have been on byetta for a couple of months now. I have seen a huge
drop in my grocery bill. I have also been very diligent about eating
right and have started walking in the mornings. My goal was to be able
to walk 5 blocks to the gas station to get my morning paper. I reached
that goal this week.
I am not eating near as much as I used to. I can make a pot of chili
and it lasts a whole week. Byette has been a blessing for me. Susan

Franks comments were…I see better, I feel a little nauseous…but doesn’t need
anything for it and a biggy …he’s not hungry !!!!!, he ate before he left and
he’s due for a snack and I was upset about this…. the tester is in the
truck…he took my jeep. He has a tester in all his trucks…he always has one
with him…
(Franks daughter is getting married tomorrow and he had to go to rehearsal..but
he was sent with pepto tabs and glucose tabs.)

He feels good.

Waiting for him to come home to get test read.
