Just to introduce myself
Hi -
Just want to introduce myself. I am a Type 2 dx in 2001 with an A1c of
15 in ketoacidosis due to a UTI. (ouch!) I had hypoglycemia for most of
my life. I was on insulin for two years, and then went on to taking
only Glucophage XR for the last three years, plus low carbing and
exercising. I just started Byetta yesterday and so far so good. My A1c
is ok,(5.3) and I"m average weight, but I wanted a little more variety
in my diet. To stay at a 5.3, I cannot eat any carbs at all until about
3pm. I was worried about not getting enough fiber in my diet and it was
getting awfully boring only being able to eat 5 blueberries at a time!
Since yesterday, my BG has hovered around 85 for most of the day. The
only reaction I’ve had so far is chills, and I’ve been sipping ginger
tea just in case.
I am so excited to find this group. I hope I’ll be able to contribute
as much as I know I’ll learn from all of you.
I see that there are some of the same folks here as on another Byetta
support group I just joined. Sorry if some of this was redundant for
you.

Hi Polly and welcome to the group. I also thought I couldn’t even look at
carbs without my Bg spiking. Now I pay attention to the food’s glycemic
index. I’ve added fruit back into my diet and certain cereals, breads, pasta
and some types of rice. Using the glycemic index has completely changed the
way I eat while maintaining my Bg at an acceptable level. You can get an
overview of what the glycemic index is by googling it, or you can buy one of
many books on the subject. I’m currently reading one of the New Glucose
Revolution series.
Good luck.

Thanks Roy! I also use the glycemic index, and enjoyed the Glucose
Revolution series. My newly added carbs have included whole grain flax
bread with 3 g. of fiber, 1/3 cup of yams, and strawberries! It’s been
heavenly.
