Lows with the 10 mcg pen?
Did any of you experience lows when you switched from the 5 to the
10? I made the switch on Saturday and my BG dropped to 60. I had to
drink OJ and eat a Baby Ruth to get it up to 101. I am going to get
some glucose tablets today. It took it a while to go back up.
Then yesterday we went to my Mom’s for Mother’s day. I took my shot,
then about 25 mins later ate salad, steak, and a wheat roll. I
started feeling sort of dizzy and took my BG and it was 82, which,
while I know it’s in the normal range, felt like a low.
Am I going to do this every time with the 10 Pen or will I adjust? It
was one thing to have that awful low from ODing on the stuff but to
go low when I am taking a regular dose? My doctor doesn’t have a lot
of experience with this drug so calling him to see if this is normal,
wouldn’t really be of any help to me.
Is is possible to not get all of the dosage? You know, push the pen a
bit more than halfway then pull it out and shoot the bit that is left
in the trash?
Your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding! I don’t take any other medicines. I am newly
diagnosed and my doctor wants me to get my BG down with diet/exercise
and byetta.

Very good point. Clinically it’s not a low until it’s below 60. I used to feel
like I was starving and sort of weak when I would get to 75 or below. I now
feel at my best when my bg is in the upper 80’s and have no problems when I am
in the 70’s, It helps the weight gain issue. I’m not always having to feed
lows or at least think I need to. It’s been quite a change. Pat in ID

I am debating asking my doctor to prescribe the 5 mcg pen for me. Today I
decided to eat lunch at 11 and that way would have at least 6 hours before
supper and could do my shots at lunch and supper. I figured I would eat more at
lunch than at breakfast and therefore, not have a low BG.
So I took the shot and about thirty minutes later, ate lunch. About forty five
minutes later, I started feeling a bit clammy and light headed. After about 15
minutes of that, I tested myself and found that my BG was 58. So I had to drink
a real Cherry Coke and eat some cookies to bring it back up. I was shaky for
about an hour and a half and had that low blood sugar feeling for a few hours.
I lost 10 lbs while on the 5 mcg pen and never had any side effects. My BG,
however, rarely went below 120 and I looked forward to the 10 mcg pen. Now
this…

I think that for some of us, the 10 pen is just too much at one time. I
can’t blame my lows on anything but the Byetta, since the only other med
I’m taking anymore is Metformin, and that’s never caused me to go low
before. Since I’ve gone back to the 5 pen, and even though I use it 3
times per day, I have much more control over my BGs. I still can’t
overeat, but I don’t really get nauseated, and my sugar is usually
between 80 and 110. Of course, if I really blow it, it can still spike
pretty high, but those are farther and fewer between now days. I’m still
losing weight very slowly, some weeks not at all, some weeks a pound or
two (I hear the last 10 are the hardest, and that’s what I’m working
on). I’m happy, very seldom hungry, and not shaky anymore.. Yea!
