A Pen Question
Several months ago my diet counselor gave me a kit that contained the pen and
several needles. We accidentally threw away the extra needles and I have been
using the same pin and needle for several months. I just got a new pen yesterday
should I throw away the old pen? And if so how should I dispose of it?

You’ve been using the same pen and needle for months? Wow. That needle
must hurt by now! Hopefully you’re gotten some replacement needles, too.
I’m on my second pen and the first one just didn’t work after about 64
doses, I’m surprised yours was still working. You can just throw the pen
away in the trash, I don’t believe it’s especially harmful in the trash.
For the needles, I bought an inexpensive sharps container at the drug store
(about $3) to contain the needles. You can check with your local waste
disposal utility and ask how they recommend you handle it. Some pharmacies
collect the filled containers (mine doesn’t, I don’t think). I work at a
hospital, I plan on taking it in when it’s full and getting rid of it there.
Often you will be told just to secure the cap on with duct tape or the like
and throw it in the regular trash.

Yeah sometimes it does hurt other times it doesn’t. As for the needle I’ll just
put it in my home made sharps can (old coffee can) then try a local drug store
for disposal. If that fails there is always my doctors office.

The pen is supposed to be good for 60 doses (plus a few extra for priming)
so if you’re taking two shots a day it should last you just one month. When
it’s empty it just "locks up" (you can’t even twist the plunger). I think
they do tell you to throw it away 30 days after you start using it, even if
it’s not empty, but I suspect that’s pretty conservative, you can probably
just keep using it until it’s empty as long as it’s kept under good
temperature control the whole time.

Carl, if you take two doses a day, it lasts 30 days, sometimes a few
days longer. It’s recommended you toss the pen after 30 days, but I
always get a few extra days out of each pen, depending on how many times
I have to prime it.

Carl, I have heard of doing a lot of things on the fringe, but keeping
needles on the fringe (fringe of what, BTW?) tops them all. :>0!!!!

I had a question on that one actually. This last time my pen had a LOT of
liquid left when it wouldn’t turn anymore. That’s weird. Whats up?

Rebecca, if your pen had a lot of spit left and wouldn’t turn, it’s
probably jammed. I’d call Amylin for advice and they might replace it
for you.
I had a pen jam once. I reprimed it by shooting it in an upright
position and it fixed itself. <g>

Rebecca,
If you got all of the expected doses from your pen (i.e., at least 60) I
wouldn’t worry about it. If it stopped before the expected number of doses
I’d call the Byetta folks and talk to them about it, it’s probably jammed.
(Don’t know the number, I’m sure it’s at Byetta.com.)

Oh well, it was right before we left for 5 days so… Tossed it. But next
time I will, thank you.

I replace my used needle in the container I took it from with the safety on the
needle and place it the prep envelope with the wipe and tape it closed and throw
it in the trash.
