Blood in my pen

What should I do?

There is now blood in my pen.

I took my Byetta tonight, just before dinner. I did nothing
different, and it must have hit a vein, as it bled, and when I pulled
the needle back, there was blood on the needle, and then I saw that
somehow, blood got into my byetta pen. What do I do? Do I throw it
away, get a new one? Is it safe, since its my own blood? Is it
contaminated now?

The only other thing I noticed was that I got nauseated really fast,
to where I couldn’t really eat much dinner, but I think thats because
it got into my system faster, by hitting the vein.. and its possible I
was just nervous and stressed with the fact that I got blood in that

stupid pen.

Call the Byetta 800 line and they’ll give you a voucher for another one.

No! Don’t use it. It is contaminated.

Okay, I called the helpline this morning, and I felt afterward, that I
should let you all know what happened, so you may know in the future
what to do, and possibly what not to do.

Problem: Blood in the pen (resulting in an air bubble and large
particle in the pen - the next morning)

How it happened: When you put you stick yourself with the needle/pen,
you press with your thumb, hard, hold for 5 + (I hold for about 15-20)
seconds, pull out and THEN release the knob. Don’t release the knob
until you have pulled it out of your skin because then pen can pull
back in the slightest, and bring back blood with it.

What to do: Call the help line at 1-800-868-1190 - they will send you
a kit of some sort, where you will send back your pen to them, free of

charge, and they send you a voucher for a new one. It should get to
you in the next day, so you will be off Byetta for approximately 1
day, which should not hurt you - just continue to watch what you eat
still and keep up with your diabetes meds and insulin.

I hope this helps someone now, or in the future. Trial and Error.

Kirsten, I had a pen that got blood in it. Don’t use it. Call Amylin and
they will replace it at no charge to you.

  6. Irwin Mayme Says:

Jessica, the suspected byetta pen shouldn’t be tossed. Amylin will send
a packet to mail it back to them.
