Question on flying
Hello. OK, here’s the problem lol, I’m wondering how flying across country
from Calif to PA (pittsburg) its about am 8 hour flight with the time
differences, would affect diabetes. I’ve heard from some its really screwed
them up, other are fine. Whats YOUR opinion.
my blood sugars have been screwing up the past couple of weeks. I’m on 500
metformin ER in the morning and 1500 in the evening. Also Byetta 10 mcg
twice daily also. The Dr had me on Amaryl but we’re playing with the dose as
he feels that was the problem. The problem is I don’t because when I’d
stopped it last week it didn’t make any difference. So, I’ve done 1 mg in
the morning none at night etc. no difference.
I’m going down after dinner. Yea I know, weird. But I can start with a 110
or so, and have say a pork chop with some pasta shells and spinach, or a low
carb tortilla and some hamburger meat, refried beans and cheese, sour cream
and a salad, or steak and acorn squash and a yam and in an hour I’m anywhere
from 80-40 BG.
This is bizarre.
Anyway back to the question. I’m wondering how flying across country would
affect me.

Yes, it can screw you up a bit, but it’s best to think more about your meals at
first, than the time of day. After I was diagnosed, I flew to Germany from
Michigan 4 times, three to visit and once to move there. The first big thing
(and this is a lot different than my first 3 trips because of 9/11) is that you
have a package of needles with your prescription information on them. This goes
for ALL of your scrips. If you need extra labels, your pharmacist should be
able to print extras. Secondly, have a note, on prescription paper, from your
doctor, signed and legible, about the reason you have the needles with you.
Now, I have no idea if going through the x-ray machines can hurt any of your
drugs, so I would probably make some phone calls to check, or keep a separate,
small bag for your meds and ask them to hand-inspect it. As for keeping the
byetta cool, I think we’ve discussed that one to death. =) Besides, I am sooo
not the person to ask about that. Good luck on
your trip!
