Fwd: [Diabetes_And_Byetta] Re: pen vs

Hi Pat,

I am taking metformin extended also. I was taking 500 in the morning
and 500 at dinner. Two doctors told me that was wrong for ME. ( We
are all different, so I am not saying what you are doing is wrong) My
doctor told me that I should take the extended 1000 at dinner together.
Maybe something you want to talk with your doctor about, maybe it is
more effective that way and you will not have to increase the
metformin. Just a thought.

I’ve been interested in the discussion of metformin doses. I’m on 850 TID
currently and I’m wondering if I should switch to the XR version. It was
offered to me a few years ago but I ultimately declined because to get a
similar dose I’d have been taking five pills a day instead of three and it
wasn’t available in generic at the time so my copay would have been $30
instead of $5. I was also on a vitamin regimen three times a day anyway so
it didn’t really make much difference convenience wise. I’ve been able to
greatly simplify my other meds, partly due to the Byetta, and it’d be great
it if I could get it down even more.

Is it available in generic now? Do the tablets come in 1000 mg or are they
all 500 mg still? Of course with the Byetta it’s possible my dose wouldn’t
ultimately need to be quite so high. (I’m not in any hurry to decrease it,
    but eventually maybe.)

I use RxList all the time (I’m a medical transcriptionist). They do not
have a listing for a generic metformin XR/SR version, they list only Foramet
and Glumetza. Of course they don’t list metformin (regular) separately
either, so I guess that doesn’t mean much.

Thanks for your info, everyone. I’ll check into it further.

i have to admit i was wrong in that thinking also. if you look at the
difference between the regular and the ER Metformin, the ER is recommended
to be taken all at once with dinner. i myself was a bit shocked also.
Although i do take ONE 500 in the morning as i found i need it.
