dr. visit today - insulin Novalog- byetta red spots, welts - update
Hi Everyone,
I finally saw my endo doctor today. I was hoping he would not be
skeptical about what was causing my bumps, welts, and rashes at the
injection sites of byetta. I printed out some comments that were made
on the internet so that he knows that I am not alone. He told me that
I was 1 in 200. I told him there are others and I showed him some
posts. My sugars have been high in the morning. 160’s 170’s and had a
day of over 200 with a high of 300. He told me not to take benedryl.
He did not like the fact that I was taking it 2 x’s a day before my
injection. ( I was told to do this by my primary doctor cause he was
on vacation) He told me to continue with the Claritin and he
prescribed a cream for me to use on the red spots. It is called
mometasone furoate cream. I will let you know how it works.
He told me that it seems that the byetta was not working for me. He
told me I needed insulin. I know from this group that people are on
insulin and byetta. Because, of this group, I had enough knowledge to
ask him if I could take the insulin with byetta. He said I could. I
do not want to give up on the spit too easily. I don’t care if I get a
little spotted, here and there. ( as long as I don’t like mealworms
instead of steak) lol…… I am not into bikini’s either…lol I
know I have lost inches around my midriff and stomach area.
According to his scale he said I only lost 1 lb. I told him my clothes
fit differently.
I have just read a lot today about Novalog and byetta. The doctor
prescribed me novalog. He told me to take it 15 minutes before eating
breakfast and dinner. He told me to turn the pen to 21. He told me if
I still get high readings to call him. He also told me that this was
a long acting/short acting insulin. 70/30 Is there only one type of
Novalog? Because everyone is saying it is short acting and he told me
it is long and short.
Also, wanted to mention that I told him I do not feel as full on the 10
pen as I did on the 5 pen. He asked me if I take my shot and then wait
15 minutes before eating. He is really big on waiting the 15 minutes.
He told me most of his patients see greater weight loss if they wait
the 15 minutes too. He also told me that the feeling of fullness could
go away…:(

Dale, I take humalog 75/25, which is a short- long-acting insulin. I’ve
had some lows, so test regularly until you get the feel for how the
insulin works with the byetta. It’s a lot of work to keep track of
everything, is’t it? But it’s the best thing to do as you’ll have the
info handy for your doc.

70/30 is a mix of insulins, not just Novalog. Novalog starts working quickly
and tapers of in 4-5 hours. 70/30 contains a longer acting insulin, but I don’t
know which version. It lasts a lot longer that Novalog alone. Be sure to
check your bg often for lows. Insulin and byetta can really bring down the
numbers. Pat in ID
