Byetta pen becoming less effective…
Hi everyone,
I don’t post or read much here because things are pretty smooth
sailing with the Byetta. I’ve been on it for 4 months, and the most
major problem I’ve had is the extreme fatigue. But that appears to
have subsided, yeah!
My only other issue is that I’ve noticed is that the last week/few
days of using a pen before it gets used up, the Byetta becomes much
less effective. I rarely take Byetta on the road with me, so it’s not
a matter of me leaving it out too long.
Has anyone else eperienced this too?
TIA,
Amy

Amy, some people on the big blog have noticed this.

Watch out for lows if you’re adding Novalog to Byetta, especially since you’re
switching to the 10 mcg at the same time. Pat in ID

Yes, for coverage
Melissa, did your doc explain why he/she wants you to do both Novalog and
Byetta? Byetta is supposed to help you make the right amount of insulin.
Using Byetta and a short term insulin just seems redundant.
I admit that I have done it, once, but only when I went high after eating a
whole bag of strawberry twisslers. (Lizards love them????). I won’t say how
high my sugar was after that, but lets say that I had enough to share. LOL

Janie,
Thanks for your response. What (and where) is the big blog?
Amy

I will see effects from Byetta if my numbers stay where he wants them.
If they do not stay where he wants them, then I take X amount of NovoLog
I’ve been taking Byetta since Dec. had NO problems until this weekend, so he
called me in Sunday to the office and started me on NL right there. So
far…it’s working.
Before B I had HUGE spikes when eating any carbs… with B the week or so I
was trying to see what I could eat in moderation and what I could not eat.
Pizza would kill me…but with B I did not go over 150…which is good. But
over the weekend…I had a hot dog on bun (Sunday) and it spiked to nearly
300…so I called him and here we are.
Melissa
A fair answer that is to the point. And I am not complaining, or questioning
you or your doctor. I am just trying to understand. I will hush if you don’t
want to discuss it further. But I have to wonder how you will see any effect
from Byetta if you already take a short term insulin. Also, will your
pancreas be able to tell how much Novalog is in your system, and will it
make less of its own insulin because of the Novalog?

Don’t think it was low carbs but one should not make it spike to nearly 300!
I eat whole wheat what is suggested by my weight watchers group.
It was Stale to boot and so I only ate 1…thank goodness

And then there are people like me who eat only 30-40 grams of carbs a day and
would be ill from eating 1600 grams of carbs from anything. I see that and
think - HOLY COW!! I think it would work out to about 50 days of carbs for me,
unless I am having another math impaired moment. - Marsha

And a whole bag has 150 gm of carbs.
On a related note, did you know that a medium sized bag of Cheetos has
1600 calories? That is a whole days alotment for some people. And some
people will eat a whole bag during a ball game. (Note - I don’t watch
ball games).

Sorry, I can not answer your question.
I waiting for it to come to Canada too.
I’ll be asking my Endo, for a script ,as soon as I know it’s available here.
I told my GP about it & he said let’s hope it comes to Canada soon.

i have been agonizing over the wasa crackers i have
been eating occasionally because they have 5 net carbs
April 11th, 2004 at 2:03 pm
Noticed that myself - also end up with 25% or so of the juice still in the
pen.I know it stops working when I’m not nauseated any more.

target carries the sugar free twizzlers.
jodi
I literally laughed out loud at this….I love twizzlers, and I
figured out not long ago that lizards apparently love them too. I
also ate a lot of them, altho not a whole BAG ;o) and had to take
some Novolog to drop myself back down to normal range. :o) Thanks
for admitting it, Andrew…I don’t feel so bad now. Jeez…can you

Jodi, great to know they are at target! How many calories and carbs do
the sugar free twizzlers have?
April 17th, 2004 at 7:48 am
Yeah, same thing here. Someone who eats 30 grams of carbs a day, sometimes
less, and agonizes over the lowest carb Wasa Cracker with 5 net carbs can barely
imagine eating 1600 grams at a time. I’d be pumping pure glucose in my veins!
By the way Andrew, are you sure about your 1600 grams of carbs per bag? I went
to Calorie King and they say Cheetos Puffs have 13 grams of carbs per ounce, if
you take that times a POUND of Cheetos that is 208 carbs per POUND of Cheetos,
if you divide that into 1600 grams of carbs that would be something like 7.95
pounds of Cheetos. I don’t know anyone who has ever eaten 8 pounds of Cheetos
at one sitting. A bag tends to be 22.5 ounces from what I can find on the web -
and that would be 290 grams of carbs for the big bag - huge for me, but for
people on the ADA diet it is within their range of high levels of carbs.
Cheers!

wish i could tell you but i have none at the moment. i know that with the
sugar alcohol subtracted, it is pretty negligable for carbs anyway. and they
are so good.

However, it does not address the sugar alcohols, which do impact BG, just not as
quickly as sugar.
I can’t handle sugar alcohols much - they give the trots. It appears that some
of them give me spikes, just like sugar does, so not all of them are equal. As
with all things, YMMV. - Marsha

i don’t worry about calories though i should. i’ve tested enough to know
that sugar alcohol doesn’t affect my bg’s. i do know that if i eat more than
3 of those things, i get the trots too.
jodi
Lots of calories 130 for 6 twizzlers.
