New to the group
Hi - I just found this group and wanted to join. I have Type II
diabetes and started using Byetta in December of 05. I have tolerated
it well but have problems with my fasting AM blood sugars - they are
usually really high - around the 200 or over mark. Has anyone else
experienced this?
Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to the group. I’m using Byetta by itself for the most
part. I only use humalog when my bg is high, usually after a high carb
lunch. <s> My morning reading is in the 110 range, which is higher than
I’d like, but can go lower if I remember to have a small snack at bedtime.

Ahh, well, you found me out, did you?
It’s all Dad’s fault anyway - the
family history of diabetes is on his side. Grandma Cox was a little butterball
and died of heart failure secondary to diabetes. Dad was overweight too (same
genes) but never developed diabetes because he had a bleeding ulcer and had to
have about half of his stomach removed in an unintentional stomach reduction
operation, at which point he lost a massive amount of weight and stayed thin the
rest of his life. Lucky him. I have the insulin resistance and the weight from
it because of their thrifty genes.
Cheers!

welcome Karen we are all fighting the same fight
and it is a little easier sharing on this group
Hi. I’m a new member and just wanted to post and introduce myself. My name is
Karen and I am 42 years old. I’ve been a type 2 diabetic for almost 11 years.
I’ve been on Byetta since December 2005. I also take Actos, Glyburide, and
Metformin. I’m under good control right now. My fasting sugars are running
between 80 and 90. I’ve lost about 30 pounds since December. I’m seriously
overweight so this is a good thing. I might have gained a little back this past
month. I haven’t weighed in a while. I accidently left my Byetta out of the
fridge all night one night so it doesn’t have the same effect as usual. I will
be getting a new pen on Monday though so I should be getting back to my regular
schedule then. My appetite has increased since my Byetta was left out so I may
have gained some of the weight back. I will see my MD again in June and will
weigh then. I don’t weigh at home because the scales are unreliable so I only
weigh at my doctor’s. I’ve been getting burned out with all the finger sticks
and injections lately. "Diabetes Burn Out " they call it. I thought if I joined
a group where other people are going through the same daily rituals as I am then
maybe I can gain back some enthusiasm for taking care of myself. Anyone else
burned out?
Anyway, I’m glad to be here and I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone.
Blessings,
Karen

HI Karen,
I am fairly new to the group also. My name is Darla and I just turned 47. I
have had Type 2 diabetes for 12 years. I can sympthazie with the burnout
feeling. I get so tired of having to watch every single bite and not being able
to eat carbs without taking an injection. I use Glucophage XR, Humalog sliding
scale insulin, Lantus and Byetta. I have been on Byetta since December 2005. I
never really had any nausea other than just a little bit at first. I was
fortunate, lots of people can’t take it.
I am 6 feet tall and weight 210. Since I am so tall, my weight is spread out
but need to lose about 40 pounds at least. It is VERY hard to lose weight
while taking insulin.
I have been getting up at 5 am and walking every morning before work. It does
help me feel better and gives me more energy during the day.
While there are so many diet tips and fads, the only real answer is to watch
what you eat and exercise. And while that is easy to say, it is often hard to
do.
I guess my incentive is that I don’t want to have diabetic complications and be
ill later in life and unable to do the things I want.
Blessings to you as well,
Darla

The Byetta hotline gives the info that the pen can be at room temp (70 degrees,
I suppose) for 144 hours total. But that is cumulative and mishandling can
occur before we get the pen as well as error on our part. Pat in ID

Darla,
Thanks for responding. We seem to have some things in common. I was on
insulin before the Byetta but I was able to go off it when I started the
Byetta. I was on Novolog. My last A1C was 4.8 so I’m happy with that.
I’m’ a lot more overweight than you are though. I have about 140 pounds
to lose. Not quite sure what exactly my weight is right now as I haven’t
weighed in a while. See my MD in June and will weigh in then. I get the
nausea sometimes but it isn’t unbearable. It helps me control my
appetite. I hope to get to know you and everyone better soon. Hang in
there with those burn-out feelings. I worry about complications too. I
lost my dad due to heart problems related to diabetes. It will benice to
have encouragement from this group to stay in control and not slip on
the diabetes care.
Thanks again.

Hello, my name is Lisa and I am a diabetic. I am new to the group and I
am miserable. After running 1Ac level of 7.3 consistently for nearly 2
years, I decided to switch from family doctor to an Endocrinology group
for additional help about 6 months ago. The Endo took me off of Avandia
due to the struggle I was having with weight gain. I have lost about 10
pounds since, but now my 1Ac level is 9.9 and I feel horrible. Every
inch of me aches and my vision is blurry. 2 weeks ago I was started on a
5mg pen of Byetta. After several days of breathtaking nausea, headaches,
and jitters I seem to be tolerating it better. My BG numbers have not
changed. They are still over 200 at all times of the day and my appetite
has rebounded with a vengence. Has anyone else had similar experiences
with increased appetite and no changes in BG numbers in the beginning?
Any suggestions?
Thanks for listening. Lisa P
August 4th, 2004 at 2:09 pm
Hi Lisa,
Just a note as I am at work. I did not respond rapidly to the 5 mcg pen. It
took my BG down a bit, but not nearly enough. I went to 10 mcg about the 2nd
week and I have been MUCH better since then. My BGs are still not where I want
them, but they are closer to normal than they have been in a long time. I take
Metformin & Byetta. In order to deal with hunger (which I still sometimes have)
I use 1000 mg of hoodia. It works for some, not for others. Overall I do much,
much better on the 10 mcg - my hunger is mostly gone, I’ve lost weight, my BG is
much better. I figure eventually the weight loss alone will result in better BG
control.
Hang in there…
Cheers!
Marsha
August 4th, 2004 at 8:05 pm
Hi Lisa, Welcome to the land of Lizard Lovers, isn’t it the pits sometimes.
Yes, you are not alone, we all went though in one way or another what you are
experiencing. Your body is struggling to readjust and move on the disease. I
do the same as Marsha, 1000 mgs. of Hoodia. Plus my Endo put me on 2 mg’s of
Apepidix-2, not sure it helps but my hunger is in control. You have a
particularly stubborn case of diabetes so it will take a bit more time. I have
been
diagnosis as a person with diabetes for over 25 years or so. My BG was like
yours often and even higher. Now I am between 85 and 120 most all of the time.
August 8th, 2004 at 7:58 am
Thanks to everyone who offered support and suggestions. When I
vistied my Endo last, I was ready to be put on insulin. I had been
fighting it with diet and exercise. Being taken off the Avandia
really sent me on a downward spiral. I felt a little better in the
beginning, but that did not last. I haven’t changed my monitoring
habits since being put on Byetta. Just checking in the morning and
right before dinner. Checking every couple hours for a few days
would probably give me an idea of what is going on. One good thing
is that most of my family is diabetic, the family curse. So it was
detected early. I am the only one on Byetta. Most are doing well
with just oral medications.
I think maybe my appetite is persistant as an effect of my bad
eating habits. As a child, I was forced to clean my plate. Still
doing it today. My appetite seems to be triggered by time of day as
well as time of the month.
Anyway, I am babbling…. how long did folks stay on the 5mg pen
before moving up to the 10mg? Next appointment is July and I think
I am already ready for the 10mg. It’s been a little over 2 weeks
since I started.
Thanks for listening, Lisa
August 8th, 2004 at 5:02 pm
Lisa,
If you must clean your plate, use a small one. I no longer use large plates. I
put small amounts on the small plate and therefore I do not gorge. It is one
way in which we can learn not to abuse food. Also, hoodia helps deal with the
desire to eat what we do not need to eat.
I use a food log and weigh and measure food to keep my intake down - both
calories and carbs - and it helps a great deal.
Cheers!

i read a study recently that dark green and dark blue

August 9th, 2004 at 11:07 pm
Hi Annie,
Actually, dying your food an unappetizing blue/green color also works for the
That, and adding meal worms, crickets and other gila monster
sighted. Try dying your scrambled eggs green - the old "green eggs and ham"
sort of thing.
treats to your pizza. Or, for the Trekkie minded some Klingon Gah might do the
trick to curb the desire to eat.
There is a method to the color issue. For instance, orange is a "thirsty" color
that gets people to move through fast food restautrants more rapidly. Color
theory is rather remarkable.
Sometime, look at the differences in the colors of fast food places versus
swanky restaurants where they want you to stay, savor the food and order all the
fancy wines. They are vastly different and the reason is the psychology of
applied color to make someone more interested or less interested in eating.
Music is also a factor.
Before I really got into that mind-set I bought my present dishes which are the
color of a ripe peach. Not about to change my color theme now, which
fortunately is also about beiges and browns, so it is not all fast-food
restaurant colors.
Cheers!

i know color does do stuff to your psyche. i remeber
reading about warm colors, cold colors, calming
colors…etc..none of our dishes match, but
unfortuantley we dpn’t have the dark green or blue,
however we have some correll dishes that have a couple

diameter. i often use those

That just figures, I have light blue plates!! It seems the big
thing I need to do right now is get organized. My schedule is
hectic, I work at an ER and I have been covering vacations and
working 3rd shift for the lst couple weeks. My enitre body feels out
of whack. Has anyone designed food logs that they would be willing

They get higher during the day and sometimes they are going over 150.
At 150 I get sugar cravings. Is this normal?

hi Eveyone,
I just found this group since starting 5mcg byetta one month ago.As a
matter of fact, I just got my 2nd pen today. My numbers have come down
very nicely this month but I haven’t had ANY weight loss.
I’m a little discouraged at that because I thought I was really being
strict with myself all month. I was hoping for some support so I can
make the most of this drug, My first follow up visit to my endo is
this coming Monday. Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

Be patient!! It will get better for you hopefully. I was dissapointed my first
month, only losing 5 lbs…like a teaspoon of water out of the lake! My 2nd
month, I lost 15 lbs…and still have a week to go on the 2nd pen. 1month on 5,
3 weeks on 10 20lbs. Still neauseated…but getting much better.

Hi,
New to the group. I am a 62 year old female-married with thre grown children.
I havve had diabetes since at least ‘87 - the first I knew. I did not care
about it and actually denied its existence until I developed symptoms.
Currently after taking many insulins and oral agents I am taking 10 units of
Byetta twice a day. Naturally I am overweight and am thrilled that this insulin
can cause weight loss. Is there a particular time when it is good to take the
injections. Currently I take one dose at breakfast and one at dinner time.
Should you take it before or after meds. Are there any tricks to aiding the
byetta to work. Currently I am adhering to the Weight Watchers Program and
doing pretty.
What is the average loss for individuals taking the Byetta. I did try to look
this up on the internet but did not find much data.

*Welcome to the group. Please understand that Byetta is NOT insulin. Also,
its primary purpose is to get your blood glucose stabilized. You can help
that happen by eating lower carb and making sure your carbs are complex -
fruits, veggies, 100% stone ground whole wheat bread, etc. Remember your
body sees white flour, white potatoes, and white pasta just like it sees
sugar. Those foods will cause your blood sugar to spike. Some do lose
weight - some have lost over 100 lbs, some of us 10 - and some none at all.
But Byetta will not make you lose weight like magic. You need to eat right
and get exercise. What Byetta does for most people is keep them from being
hungry all the time. For me, it keeps me from thinking about food all the
time. Some people lose weight on Byetta because it makes them so sick and
nauseas that they can hardly eat. I do not have the nausea problem and only
minimal weight loss from the Byetta itself - but I feel good and have lots
of energy because my blood glucose has stabilized.*

injections. Currently I take one dose at breakfast and one at dinner
time. Should you take it before or after meds. Are there any tricks to

*Many people have had great success combining Byetta and Weight Watchers so
it looks like you are headed in the right direction. Most people take their
injections 15-30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. If however, lunch is
a heavy meal for you, you could take it then instead of dinner - however,
you have to wait at least six hours between injections. The timing of the
meds is something you should really discuss with your doctor - it seems that
everyone on this list is doing something different. If you go to the byetta
website, they address the timing of meds I think. What I do is take my
injection and take my vitamins and supplements with a glass of water right
after the injection. I am fortunate in that I do not have to take any other
meds for my diabetes. I take my blood pressure med and statin before bed -
about three hours after dinner.*

*Bonnie - it just differs so much with every individual and quite a few
people have no weight loss at all. Hopefully, you will be one of the ones
that do. But keep focused on getting your blood glucose under control.
Once you do that you will be able to build in more exercise to your routine
and that will help your diabetes and your weight. I started Byetta at the
end of December. I have lost ten pounds since then - but I credit my hard
work at Curves 3-4 days a week and careful attention to what I eat and
portion sizes. It is easier to do that when I am not thinking about food
all the time. I lost over ten pounds last year without Byetta. Give
yourself reasonable goals. It is easier to keep weight off that you lose
slowly because that means you are developing better habits that will give
you a better chance at long-term success. Keep us posted on your progress!*

Hello everyone, I just joined the group and wanted to introduce
myself. I am 51 years old and live in McKinney, TX. I’ve been type 2
for 9 years and had really bad control problems for most of that time.
I started Byetta 5 about 6 weeks ago and I am extremely please with
the results. I’m lost approximately 20 pounds so far and my fasting BS
is in the 95 to 110 range now. I can’t wait until July 13th when I get

I have just finished my first round of byetta for 2 months - its
better than any of the other pills combined I have tried - I feel so
much better. However, I am not sure if I am happy or unhappy with
the A1C results. Lost 15 lbs - but my A1C stayed the same at 7.5.
Actually this is a bit disturbing. Maybe I am not using it the right
way..or maybe the 5mg pen wasn’t enough. My doctor gave me 10mg to
start….(looking forward to that couple of days of the sicky feeling!
ugh.) Hopefully this is going to turn those numbers around.
I also am having a problem with my feet and had a cortisone shot.
could that have had a impact on the A1C?
I am the first patient for my GP on this wonderful drug so he is
leading the way, but I am hungry for more info and hope this group
can give me some personal feedback and thats why I joined. Is this
drug still so new the doctors are still trying ways to gain number
control for their patients? Here are some questions I have - do
you give your shot in the morning before that first cup of coffee?
does it make a difference? I use powdered creamer and eat breakfast
after the first or second cup. Does this stop the benefits of
byetta? Is it possible to give yourself a shot 3x a day? would this
help balance out numbers during the day? Yes, you still have to diet
no matter what - but would taking the shot before lunch help? How
about if you forget to take the shot before starting a meal but
remember after eating a small amount - have I ruined the effect of
the byetta totally? These may be silly questions and maybe already
answered in past posts but I have read quite a few and didn’t see
anything to help me reach my answers.
I have learned to hate the lab, but love the lizard spit! Heres
hoping for better results in 3 months!
Thanks..deborah
