Hello
Hi. My name is Tammie and I am new here. I just started Byetta three
weeks ago and have been looking for a group such as this. This is my
second try on Byetta and so far so good.
To tell you a little about myself: I am 40, a mother of two, live in VA
but originally from SC, I have been diagnosed for 8 years, and recently
had to drop out of college due to level problems and stress.
I look forward in meeting each of you.

Hi, Tammie. And welcome to the group. Are you on any other meds besides
Byetta? I’m on Lantus 10 U and Humalog as needed (seldom<g>)

Hello John. Thanks for the welcome. Well, my family on my mom’s side is
pretty much consumed by diabetes and I was told by my OBGYN when I was
pregnant that I would probably end up diabetic due to have gestational
diabetes. I blew it off until one day I had to go to the doctor for a
serious kidney infection.
The doctor did the normal tests they do and came in and said my glucose
level were high and asked what type of meds I was on for diabetes. I told
her I wasn’t diabetic and the argument persisted for about a minute or two.
Well that was 8 years ago and still my levels weren’t under control no
matter what I did or what I took. My doctor left and I had to go to a
different doctor and she sent me to an endocrinologist in Kingsport, TN. At
first he was really nice and seemed to generally care. We set a plan of
action and I worked very hard to stick to it. When I went back, I still had
high levels. So he put me on the Byetta. First it was 5 units. in two weeks
I had to go back for a check up. I told him I was rally nauseated. He then
upped my dose and within three days I was so sick I couldn’t move without
throwing up and doubling over with severe stomach pain. Instead of reducing
my dose back down, he yelled at me and told me to starve sometimes and maybe
I wouldn’t have stomach pain. This upset me terribly and I stopped taking
the Byetta. The pain went away.
I had a friend to pass away with complications of diabetes and it really
scared me because she was just a couple years older than me. So I asked to
be sent to an endocrinologist in Bristol, TN that I had heard about. He
listened to what I had to say and said the reason for the sickness and the
stomach pain was I had been told the wrong way to take the Byetta and my
dose was raised way to soon. So far I have been on it three weeks and still
a little nausea but no stomach pain. My levels are starting to come down and
I am having to adjust to lower and closer to normal level. I have gone from
a normal of 350 to 450 down to 200 to 280. Still on the high side but
getting better all the time.
Sorry for the long story but that is what happened. Take care and thanks
again for the welcome.

Hello Janie. Yes I take Glucophage 850 mg twice a day, Novolog 70/30 mix and
was on sliding scale of Humlin R. I had been on Actos but the edema was so
bad that it had to be stopped.

Hi Tammy, I am Marsha. I’m 56, have been doing my best to fight off this
problem of diabetes for about 5 years ago - maybe 6, can’t quite remember. At
first I controlled with just diet and exercise and did well. Later I needed
oral meds and could not tolerate metformin - the med of choice. So I was on
glucotrol extended release for a few years and that went very well until the end
of last year when I began experiencing medication failure.
I’ve been on Byetta since the 22nd of the month - 9 days. I have seen some
changes in BG down, but not as much as I had hoped. I plan to ask my doctor on
Friday if I can up the dose early. At present I am on no other medication
because of side-effects ranging from edema to anaphylaxis.
I am a full time law student, wife, mother of a 27 year old who lives next door
with her children and husband. We live in the greater Boston area.
From dear Janie in this group I discovered something called Emotional Freedom
Therapy which I have combined with Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques to
help me deal with my stress levels, which have been considerable as of late.
Greetings,
Marsha

Dear Tammie, Thanks for the larger explanation. It is very helpful to all of
us who read it. Don’t worry about answering so fully, it is really helpful.
Most of us have learned by bitter experience that our Dr’s are human beings
capable of the same failures we are aware of in ourselves but expect better of
our
Dr’s. Many of us have had endocrinologist who let us down. I look at it as a
plus. It taught me that I would have to take charge of my own health and my
diabetes. So now you have a physician who is willing to listen and give credence
to your experience. That is a positive result from a negative occurrence.
As you move lower and lower in your BG you may have an experience like a low
blood sugars and feel giddy, shakey, wobble–I think I just made up three new
terms for low BG–but you may actually experience those feeling even if your
BG are in the high or medium 100s. So be prepared. Also be prepared to feel
much more vitality and energy. You are on the right track. Use this blog, they
are many here who have a lot more experience than I and can give you support
when you need it.

Thank you John. I am experiencing the shakies and wobbles. I try to keep a
piece of hard candy with me and it seems to ease it off. I had a really good
count today. 157 I was tickled pink. ABout lunch time though I got real
dizzy and experienced extreme nausea. After I hate something, it eased up so
my body is trying hard to adjust. Thanks for the support I am already
feeling. I appreciate you responding.

Tammie, did you take your sugars when you were feeling poorly? Could be
you were having a low.

Yes that was the first thing I did and they were 102. It is just that I have
been so high for so long that my body adapted to it and now that the levels
are coming down, my body thinks they are too low. LOL Dumb body LOLOL

Hi there Marsha. I am a law student as well. Could you explain what
Emotional Freedom Therapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques are?
It sounds really interesting and lord knows I need all the help with stress
intervention I can get. It is very nice meeting you. Hope to get to talk to
you further. Oh BTW, what area of law are you going into?

HI Dale
I live in the Southern part of New Jersey. In a little town called Riverside.

Tara, Are you overweight? I ask because most type 1’s are thinner
than type 2’s.
There is a test called the GAD test that measures antibodies in you
blood. This can help distinguish what type of Diabetes you have.

Hi Guys,
New to the group. I started Byetta November 11 and lost about seven
pounds really quickly, but nothing since. Of course, when you consider
my usual six to eight pound gain between Thanksgiving and Christmas,
this is huge.
I’m thrilled by ANY weight loss and am curious about whether you folks
have lost weight and over what time-span.

I started the spit last November and have lost, in total, about 20 pounds. I’ve
had a little back and forth with about 5-8 pounds, but that’s all my fault. I’m
not the best when it comes to doing what I’m supposed to do, and my plan for the
new year is to turn that around. I would love to get down to my "sick weight"
of about 130. Haha. I joke now because it’s good for me. It’s a long story,
but I looked good! =)

Dale,
Signe,
I am using NovoFine 30 (30 gauge x 1/3" (8mm)
The only problem is it does not fit my lantus pen. I do not know why,
but it seems to be too big.

Wow. What did your doctor say when you asked about changing needle
sizes to promote weight loss? This is so interesting.
On a blog site, someone said they changed injection sites and started
to really lose weight. Possibly this is still so relatively new that
it’s still evolving. So, did your doctor give you the larger needles
and did the doc think the size might be a factor?

Gary,
Are you gaining weight at all? I couldn’t chalk my early weight-loss
to nausea because there was none.
During the first Byetta weeks, I had no appetite at all!! Tonight I
went to a cafeteria with a friend and was astounded at how much I ate
– although, my friend pointed out, I did skip dessert. I wouldn’t
have skipped anything pre-Byetta. Are you gaining weight? I got
through the holidays without gaining an ounce. In the past, I could
count on six to eight pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas so
this is certainly positive. I’ve been wondering if a few days off
Byetta would renew the appetite suppression effect.
A "TV" doctor said last week that the size of the waist is more
important than bmi. Waist size should be no more than half of height
in inches, in which case my waist is 5" on the plus side.

Greetings Florence
Maybe change what you are eating for snacks. Or give them up for awhile
and see what happens.
Is your band as tight as it can be or can you get it tightened up a bit?
Maybe you just need to cut back on calories a bit more.
The exercise may be building muscle which weighs more than fat. Is your
body looking different? Are your clothes getting looser? Do you do
strength training with all the cardio? building muscle burns more
calories as fat burns calories faster than fat does.
Just some suggestions
