Dental Visit

Hi All,
Just like to know if it is necessary to discontinue Byetta before an extraction
as is recommended for some other oral diabetic meds.
Thank you for your reply.

    > Rebecca, this will be a first appointment and for a raging toothache. Most
likely it will have to come out or have a root canal. I won’t know until I
actually go in. I don’t want to have to go in, be told to come back after
stopping Glucophage, for instance, but thanks anyway. This is my first time
having to have dental work since being diabetic and on Byetta.

The caps are not mine. So I will definitely need to give them all the info at
the time of making an appointment instead of just going in. Thanks.

Hi, I was told to stop my Glucophage and to wait on my insulin until after
the procedure. I would think that the dentist would have told you about this
    Maybe you should call .

I’m in the process of getting an implant, after a cracked,
unsalvageable tooth. The only thing I’m aware of is stopping
aspirin therapy (and any other ‘blood thinners’ such as Plavix,
which might slow down or prevent clotting) a few days before dental
surgery, as a precaution. Just make sure your dentist knows all the
meds you are taking. Call the dentist’s office before your
procedure to ask about specific meds.

So long as you are not being put under, and you have eaten with your meds, I
would think you would be fine.

It’s important for your doctors and dentists to know what supplements
you’re taking, too. Some of them have the same affect as aspirin. Oh,
the things we have to keep track of. Diabetes can be frustrating, but
let’s look on the bright side. We’re learning a lot! <g>

There are some dyes for X-Ray or CAT scan or something that you can’t
    take with metformin.

I had oral surgery last year and I was not told to
discontinue my medications. My surgeon wanted to make
sure that my blood sugar was controlled before he did
any surgery. If I had not taken my meds, my blood
sugars would have been sky high. I don’t understand
why any dentist would want to work on you under those
    circumstances.

Yes, I have had a root canal and was told to stay on my oral meds (glucotrol)
because my sugars had to be in control - however, it is a different med we are
talking about. It is important to have BG under control for any sort of
    surgery.

That being said, don’t forget that the surgeons can control your BGs with
means other than the oral meds you may be taking. For example, when I was
hospitalized after a car wreck, they used insulin rather than my regular meds as
they were trying to keep my BGs as stable as possible.

So…. I think the moral of this story is…. your doctor *should* know
    best.
