Mar 20 (HealthCentersOnline) - A capsule made from seaweed may bring
an end to daily insulin injections for people with type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the body mistakenly destroys
the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone
needed to process glucose (blood sugar) for energy. To survive, people
with type 1 diabetes must take insulin several times a day by syringe
injections, insulin pumps or other methods.

A recent option for some patients is the surgical transplantation of
an entire donor pancreas or an islet cell transplants, in which beta

Diabetic and being sick

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

Hello. Have a question about being sick. My husband is in United Arab
Emirites. He ate some Gulf Shrimp last night. Its been super hot there.
This morning (its 12 hours difference, so that is NOW) and started
throwing up. He doesn’t know what to do, and i don’t either.
He is type 2 on glucophage and actos. Should he take his pills if
nothing is staying in his stomach? he’s trying to eat crackers and drink
lots of water, which he does anyway. He’s in a hotel and has no way to
pick up medicine if needed to begin with. i’m just at a loss. any ideas
welcome.
Thanks.

weight gain on Byetta

Wednesday, October 29th, 2003

I started Byetta at the end of January, and went up to the 10 pen exactly
one month ago. The Byetta is doing a spiffy job of lowering my appetite. I’m
only able to tolerate it by taking compazine with it for the nausea. I still
feel queasy a lot of the time. But I am seeing some improvement in my
post-prandial bg numbers, and I just had an a1c of 6.6. It was 6.7 before I
started Byetta.

Problem: I saw my endo today, and when I got on the scale, I had gained 6
pounds since I saw her a month ago. And at *that* time I’d gained 20 pounds
in just a few weeks from taking Actos. My endo had me stop the Actos a while
ago, but the weight hasn’t gone away.

My endo suggested that I stay on the 10 pen for 3 more months and if I don’t
see any weight loss by that time, we’ll stop the Byetta and try something
else.

Acid stomach and sleeping question

Monday, October 27th, 2003

Hi, I started on Byetta about a month ago and it has worked very well
for me.
About the acid stomach question: the cost per dose of Prilosec is
about $3.50 versus $0.35 per dose of PEPCID Complete, so if money is
an issue, maybe you could try Pepcid and if it doesn’t work, move up
to Prilosec.
My question is: I’m usually a deep sleeper, but since starting
Byetta, I have not been sleeping as soundly or as long and I’ve also
having unpleasant dreams (I usually enjoy my dreams, but not lately).
I don’t think it’s hypoglycemia, as I have checked some middle-of-the-
night glucoses and they are always above 100.
Anybody else experience this?

Smoothies and Byetta

Sunday, October 26th, 2003

Since I "should" have my "spit" tonight I am attempting to plan out meals with
some fruit or other carbs in them.

I have a whole book of low-carb smoothies by Dana Carpenter. Have any of you
ever tried any of them?

I am having a chocolate-yogurt smoothie for a mid-day meal at the moment for 6
grams of carbs, but no fruit. However, the majority of them DO have fruit. I
just have no White Atkins Milk at the moment (store is out) and the fruits I
have plus chocolate do not appeal to me.

In case you might be using it and don’t recognize what I mean, here is what this
sort of thing is: 1 cup yogurt, 1/2 cup diet ginger ale, 1/2 cup honeydew melon
or balls (frozen), 1/2 teaspoon lemon-limb sugar-free drink mix (Wylers makes a
nice one) and she uses Guar or Xanthan gum (I don’t - instead I use 2 tbsp of

Going off Byetta

Saturday, October 25th, 2003

Elaine–

I started Byetta last June at 5 mcg and had great results, then moved up to
10 in July. My husband and I bought a house and moved, so in the few days of
the move I did not do any shots. When I started back up at 10, after being
off for about 5 days, I had a horrible allergic reaction. The injection site
swelled into a big hive (as big as a circle made with my thumbs and
forefingers together) that itched and I had tingles going from my hands up
my arms. It lasted about 5 hours. I thought I might get used to it, so I
took the shot a few more times and continued to get the welts. Called Byetta
customer service and they had not heard of the reaction and had no advice. I
went back to the 5 mcg pen to get re-acclimated, but continued to have
reactions at the injection site. No one could figure out why I did not have
them initially. Thye were so uncomfortable I quit the spit. I have no
allergies that I know of, but obviously something there was not right. I am

Fwd: [Diabetes_And_Byetta] RE:Has Byetta changed the foods you eat?

Friday, October 24th, 2003

Joan,

Hugs, :( That is the worst. How long have you been taking byetta? and what has
the doctor said about the nausea? I felt a little nausea, when I first
started, I took pepcid ac. It worked for me. I also bought the life
savors sugar free, wintergreen they helped too. I chewed sugar free
gum too.

Hang in there,
Dale

Gerald,

You could get depression, if your diabetes is not under control too.

Has Byetta changed the foods you eat?

Sunday, October 19th, 2003

Since I have started Byetta, I have discovered that I can no longer
eat several groups of foods, Dairy, meat, fish and even eggs really
make me yucky! I am still getting nausea in the morning and evenings,
but as long as I don’t eat any of the above, at least I don’t vomit.
Anyone else finding this? Guess I need to invest in a good vegan
cookbook *G*
