Introductions
I don’t know if I ever sent in an intro so here goes. I was
diagnosed 4 years ago. I actually had had some sugar issues after
eating but my fasting’s were good before that time. Only problem is
it was never explained to me what was going on, I was just told to
"stay away from the sweets". I don’t know if I had understood
earlier if I could of or would of taken heed but, I’m sorry I never
got the chance.
I have a long history of diabetes on both sides of my family. My
maternal GF died of complications from diabetes and on my maternal
side all 3 of his brothers had diabetes so as an endo told me once it
wasn’t a question of IF for me it was only a question of WHEN. My
brother was diagnosed a couple years before me. I still have a
sister that has no problems yet.
I had been feeling poorly for awhile before I was diagnosed and even
went to a new doctor and told her how tired I was all the time and
she wanted to know if I was depressed. I told her no, I didn’t think
so. We had a health fair at work and that’s how I found out I had a
fasting BG of 250. My A1c was 10.5 when I was diagnosed. I’ve been
as low as 6.1 since then. My life took an upheavel about two years
ago and I so went off of my lifestyle program to the point I totally
ignored (other than taking my oral meds) my diabetes. That ended up
mid summer last year with me finally acknowledging to myself how
poorly I felt and taking charge once again of my diabetes. I was
back to a 9.5 then and my last A1c in early December I was back down
to 7.2. I started byetta on January 25th and I am soooo impressed
with this drug, I’m really hoping within the next 6 months to get
down into the 5 or low 6 range again. As you all know it can really
be a struggle to deal with all the things we need to do to make those
lifestyle changes. I wish I could say I was the "perfect" diabetes
patient but, I’m not I slip here and there but hoping to make those
slips farther and farther apart. I find lists like this really keep
me focused on my diabetic needs as well as a great way to keep up on
what’s new in the diabetes world. I really believe that after
experiencing Byetta, that a cure can’t be far behind.
