Well, we started Byetta….

First of all, I have to thank everyone in here for all the wonderful
answers to any "silly" questions I have asked. My husband and I
went to see the diabetic educator yesterday and last night, my
husband gave himself his first shot. I was thrilled… he did SO
well.

Anyhow, I have a question. He held the needle in place for a good 5
seconds, maybe longer, and he pulled it out and there was a tiny
drip on the needle. I told him that this topic had been discussed
in here, and that he should try to leave it in longer. Well this
morning when he injected, he left it in for almost the count of 10,
and still he had a drip on the needle. Any ideas?

I do have to share, we ate dinner, he took his shot about 15 minutes
before we ate, as was suggested by the educator, and 2 hours after

dinner his number was 102. Unreal. This is a guy we can’t seem to
get below 200 post meals. The thing that got me was, he was so
worked up about the shot, he FORGOT to take his Metform and
Ammaryl. I was a bit worried about this, as getting him to 102 was
low for him. I am wondering what the 2 oral meds with the shot will
do. Guess we will find out tonight.

Thanks to all. I have high hopes for this and think he is getting
over his fear of giving himself shots. While it sure did take him a
few minutes to give it to himself, he did it, and that in itself is
a miracle.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Yes, we are seeing a good drop in
his post meal numbers, and we are thrilled. He is a bit nervous, as he
is so not used to being much lower than 200, so getting him to 80 or
even low 70’s like he got the other day scares him. In the beginning
when he was diagnosed he would get to 110 and shake like a leaf. Will
his feeling of symptoms gradually lessen as his body gets used to lower
    BG?

He did mention a concern and I was also wondering, he is on the 5 dose,
and was told he will do that for a month, then they will increase to 10.
Well, post meals he has been around 80 or 90. He is scared 10 might be
too much. Does everyone switch to 10 after a month? Or do some stay on
5? He is afraid of dropping too low post meals. Another quesiton. He
has been checking before bed, and he is up around 130 or so. Then when
he gets up, he is in the 220’s. What on earth is causing such a high in

the morning after going all night with no eating? And how can we fix
that? He has his am shot and usually a bowl of cereal, then about 2
hours later, he is in the 150’s….. so it has come down after his shot
and eating. I just can’t figure out that rise at night. Any thoughts?
I can’t think it is too many carbs at dinner, as he can check 2 hours
post dinner and be in the 80 to 90 range.

Ahhhhh so many questions. I am sorry. I am sure you have all heard and
answered these kind of questions a zillion times, and here is yet
another confused poster asking them again!

    Thanks so much all! [:)]

Andi, that difference from bedtime to wake-up time is called the dawn
phenomenon, and your husband’s is a doozy. Part of that may be
unfinished digestion from dinnertime still going on during part of the
    night.

Please tell us again what other meds he is taking; perhaps their timing
can be changed to offset the high fasting bgs.

As your husband becomes accustomed to lower numbers, he will not be
feeling these pseudo low symptoms he has now. He should always test
before correcting to make sure that what he feels is a real low.

When I used to read the byetta blog, I noticed some people were not able
to go on to a higher dose, so simply stayed at the lower dosing. If it
is working this well now, who needs more?

    Helen,

Yeah, he is just SO high in the mornings. Ummmm he takes 1000 MG
Metform and Ammeryl 4 MG and these are two times a day. He takes
his morning pills when he gets up, then the second dose of both at
dinner. The Endo just said to take his PM meds with meals, so this
is how he has always done it. I am wondering if he took them before
bed instead of dinner? This is what we are trying tonight and we
will see how the morning goes.

    thanks so much!

I take my evening meds (glucophage and avandia) at bedtime. Helps with my
FBS, makes it 20 points lower.
