new meds
I just went to the doctor today and recieved a script for the byetta 10 mg. i
had recieved a voucher in the mail from amylin for 6 months refills at no cost.
while i was there he put me on Levemir. it is a new long acting insulin that has
just come on the market. has anyone heard of it or used it? will be starting
back on the byetta in a day or two. i have been off almost 6 weeks. i ran out
and the doc didn’t have any samples. so here we go again with the nausea.

Annie, I will be starting levimir tonight; just finished up a bottle of
UL. I plan on using it exactly the same way, tho I will start with a
lower dose per my doctor’s instructions. 20% less.

Yeah, I feel ya on the nausea. I was off for a week waiting to get some more.
It’s like I have started all over. I have finally started to calm down in the
last 20 minutes from my last shot.

What is Levemir and how does it work, what does it do? I have never heard of
this insulin before. I always like to know what’s new on the market…don’t
we all?

Levimir is what is called a basal insulin; it is supposed to provide the
background insulin seepage that most type 2s don’t have. In my case, it
is replacing ultra lente, which has been discontinued.

Levimir is a competing drug company’s version of Lantus.

I am replacing Lantus with Levimier. My doc told me i am the first patient he
has used it on. dosage wise it is unit/unit replacement It facilitates the
cellular uptake of glucose into the skeletal mudscle and fat by inhibiting the
output of glucose fromt he liver.it is used in both type I and type 2 diabetes.
given once or twice a day. once in my case.. in studies it resluted in less
weight gain than wiht NPH(it was tested against NPH, not Lantus) The package
insert doesn;t really say HOW it differs from lantus.but then i havne’t read the
package insert for lantus in a while. i hope this stuff works

Levimir does not claim to be flat as lantus does, and lantus is not flat
either. Tests show that levimir is more consistent in its dosing from
day to day.
Last night I took 15 units vs. 25 of UL, good morning number, but a
little higher now during the day than I like. However, I will try 15
again tonight and see what tomorrow looks like. Most people, just as
with UL and lantus, will need two shots a day.

Annie, someone told me there was a comparison to lantus on the levimir
website; however, I haven’t looked.
Bgs this morning were 94, 99 after coffee, 104 after lunch. I may have
to use more humalog with meals. Of course, you will be using byetta with
your meals.
I am planning on taking 15 units again tonight and see how tomorrow goes,
before I think about upping it.

i haven’t looked at the website. only the package inserts. and it does say
that a lot of people take it twice a day. as they would NPH. and it does say
that it’s "peak" is around 6 hours after doses although it doesn’t Peak and
Trough like other insulins do.
