Availability of Byetta
I’m so surprised to hear that it’s possible there are only 300,000 people taking
Byetta! It seems like everywhere I look there are more articles and more
participants. I’m not certain about it only going to Endo’s, though. My PCP
start me on it - and not for my numbers, but for my hungar. After I started
Metformin 1000mg a day my readings started dropping right away - but I was so
hungry! My hungar would wake me up at night and I’d have to get up and eat a
piece of cheese or a boiled egg or something to get back to sleep. Not a good
way to lose weight, needless to say. It’s still controlling the hungar, even
now that the nausea has gone. I’ll get my new A1c this month and find out if
either dosage is going to be altered.
(P.S. my insurance won’t cover it if I buy at a pharmacy, I have to order it
mail order. Then they only charge the regular copay.)
Jenna - good advice about an Endo. I’ll ask next week when I see my PCP about
a referral. Thank you for the suggestion.
John- thank you for your inspiring story, and my condolences for your loss.
Ruby - I don’t know if Amylin participates in any of the programs to provide
people with meds who have poor or no insurance, but I encourage you to call them
and talk to them about reaching to you and/or your clinic. I hope it’s okay to
give this number in this space - (858) 552-2200.

Question,
How does mail order insurance handle Byetta , as it is to be kept
cold?
(asking this as we have mail order, and I am wondering how on earth
they plan on delivering this via mail)
Thanks!

I get my Byetta through the mail and once it is shipped I receive it within 24
hours by either UPS or Fed EX. It comes in a styrafoam cooler with ice packs
and it is fine. I have not had any problems with it not working.

Thanks so much for all your answers. I called Caremark, our
insurance, and that is what they told me. Either UPS or FedEx and
with an ice pack. That is good to know.

I have not yet gotten Byetta by mail, but have gotten insulin by mail.
It comes in an isulated package with frozen packs on either side. I
assume they will protect the Byetta so it won’t freeze. I had posted
a message that I doubt that Byetta would freeze even if put next to a
bag of ice. Ice stays at 32 deg. F. As Byetta is a solution of active
ingredient and other things in water, it would have a lower freeze
point. (This is why rock salt melts ice. A salt/water mix has a lower
freezing point.)
