Actos, Byetta, Glucophage, what a mess

Wednesday, July 30th, 2003

Hi,

I’m new to this forum. I was diagnosed type II in 2001 and have been on
glucophage and starlix with good results and consistent below-6 a1c results.
But right around the holidays, my AM fasting sugars started measuring in the
140s, where before they’d been in the 100s. My post-prandial readings shot
up into the 200s and I craved food all the time.

My internist put me on Actos in January. It didn’t seem to help with
anything, and I gained 20 pounds within a few weeks.

I finally got a referral to an endo and she started me on the 5-pen Byetta a
couple of weeks ago. My 2-hour post-prandial readings got a lot better
(unless I ate a lot of carbs), but my AM fasting numbers didn’t improve. The
first couple of days, the nausea and headache were overwhelming so I took

Yet another saga of lizard spit success. (I got all my tests back
today) 7 mths total of metformin 500mg 2x daily, 2 mth of sporadic
and 1 mth of consistent use of byetta 5mg 2x daily (although that
changes with the next pen), poor to non existant diet control, and
unless restless sleep counts - zero exercise. A1c went fromm 11.4 to
7.2, BG from 320’s (highs near 400) to 110 (highs still in the 130
range) and I seem to have lost about 22 pounds somewhere (probably
lost it all during the weeks of abject fear staring at that pen
before I worked up the courage to stick myself with it).

Imagine how much more successful I can be over the next 6 months or
so, now that I’ve decided I really do have this stinking disease, and
have very very slowly started making a few lifestyle changes.

My only question today is - why didn’t our doctors tell us to buy the

Accu Check question

Tuesday, July 29th, 2003

We were wondering if anyone here uses the software you can get from
Accu-Check for downloading your readings. Seems you can "beam" your
information from your machine to your computer, and it will keep track
of your numbers so you can better manage. I thought it might be great
for seeing patterns and such, and thought it might be nice to be able to
have that to show the doctor instead of the chicken scratch he does in
the little book he has.

Just curious if anyone has it, and if so, what do you think of it and is
it helping you manage and see patters in your BG?

Thanks so much!

Andi

Well, we started Byetta….

Saturday, July 26th, 2003

First of all, I have to thank everyone in here for all the wonderful
answers to any "silly" questions I have asked. My husband and I
went to see the diabetic educator yesterday and last night, my
husband gave himself his first shot. I was thrilled… he did SO
well.

Anyhow, I have a question. He held the needle in place for a good 5
seconds, maybe longer, and he pulled it out and there was a tiny
drip on the needle. I told him that this topic had been discussed
in here, and that he should try to leave it in longer. Well this
morning when he injected, he left it in for almost the count of 10,
and still he had a drip on the needle. Any ideas?

I do have to share, we ate dinner, he took his shot about 15 minutes
before we ate, as was suggested by the educator, and 2 hours after

Byetta: What I must know about it?

Have you ever heard about the drug called Byetta? Byetta is a drug
supplement prescribed to the persons suffering mostly from diabetes
and having some problems in terms of low blood sugar.

It contains also a solution called sulfonylurea medicine. This type
of medicine has the contents to regulate the flow of blood sugar in
our body. Byetta is a blood management solution. In some hospitals it
can be an injected solution that serves as a cure for those diagnosed
with two types of diabetes and have blood sugar ailments.

In comparison to some medicines, pills and insulin, Byetta works in a

just come on the market. has anyone heard of it or used it? will be starting
back on the byetta in a day or two. i have been off almost 6 weeks. i ran out
and the doc didn’t have any samples. so here we go again with the nausea.

Mixing Insulin

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2003

If your diabetes management plan includes taking multiple types of
insulin, you may want to combine two types of insulin in one shot. But
before you start mixing shots, be sure that the types of insulin you
want to combine are compatible with one another or you risk altering
the effect of your regular insulin. For instance, you can mix regular
and NPH insulin and still maintain the effects. However, you cannot
mix regular insulin with lente or ultralente insulin without possibly
loosing some of the regular insulin’s effect.

The reason regular insulin looses effectiveness when mixed with lente
and ultralente insulin is because the latter contain excess zinc,
which binds to regular insulin and slows its absorption. If you do
choose to mix regular and lente (or ultralente) insulin, you will need
to inject it immediately after you’ve mixed the dose, so the zinc does
not have a chance to bind to the regular insulin. Though it is

Doc Visit

Monday, July 21st, 2003

Hi all,
I went in for a 3-month check up today. The good news is I have
lost 10 pounds since my last visit. Yay! My A1c also went down about
a half point, which is good. I will be very excited to see the
results from what they drew today. I will call next friday and have
them faxed to me. I ususally forget about it and see results at my
next visit. And my doc gave another sample, so that was good. Even
without having to pay for the Byetta, I still paid almost $60 for my
stuff today.
