What’s Behind Carb Counting?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2003

Carbohydrate counting is a precise method of meal planning for people
with diabetes. Foods containing carbohydrates (grains, vegetables,
fruit, milk, and glucose) have the largest effect on blood glucose
levels. A small amount of carbohydrates (1 apple) raises blood glucose
some; a larger amount of carbohydrates (3 apples) raises blood glucose
more. To track how carbohydrates affects your blood glucose, you have
to invest some time in keeping records, measuring food servings,
monitoring blood glucose, and learning about nutrients in foods.

Carbohydrate counting has two levels: basic and advanced. Basic
carbohydrate counting is generally used by people with type 2 diabetes
and consists mostly of counting and eating consistent amounts of
carbohydrates. Advanced carbohydrate counting is often used by people
taking insulin and is made up of recognizing and managing patterns in
blood glucose, food, medication, and exercise. The amount of work may

Answer to Blood in Pen

Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

So i called the company 1-800-868-1190 if you want the number, but it
is on the byetta.com site also.
they said to not use the pen anymore. They’ll send me a voucher and a
container to send the pen back in with. it is considered an adverse
incident and thier health care person will call me back to get info to
make a report to the FDA.
she said it happens due to a difference in pressure between the
injection site and the pen. it isn’t that common but has happend
before. Also, it is NOT normal to bleed when you inject yourself. So,
maybe if one sees that happening a lot we should let them know.
Called the Dr on call and she said wait till monday and check with my
dr to see what he wants me to do. could have figured THAT out on my

i was putting my pen back this morning and saw some red stuff in the
liquid. my shot this morning didn’t bleed profusly or anything, though
there was a drop. there was not any blood on the tip of the needle
though. what is going on?

Dr Suess

Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

Excerpts from the Dr. Suess "Fun with Diabetes" Book
March 2 was Dr. Suess’ birthday. In memoriam, I’m feeling silly today:

Lancets! Test strips! Testing now! I can, you can, we know how.

Look! See! Blood drops, one and two and three. Why won’t this meter
beep for me?

Numbers now. Number’s high! 182 – my, oh my!

Out with the insulin, out with the needle. Out with the afternoon
snack-n-feedle.

Corrections, ouch. Corrections ooch. Injections 10x/day hurt my hooch.

NPR science Friday Type 2 program

If you like to listen to NPR Science Friday they are talking about type
2. They have a call in at 2-3 eastern time.

I hope they talk about Byetta

I thought I’d intorduce myself

Monday, June 9th, 2003

Hi, I’ve been reading here and even posted a time or two, but just
realized I’d never introduced myself. I was diagnosed with type 2 a
year ago May after ending up in the hospital with my bg over 600 and
an A1c of 13. No wonder I was sick. I was put on Novalog and Lantus
and managed to control my glucose levels just fine. My A1c’s have
been 5.3-5.4 ever since. My weight on the other had blossomed. Over
40 pounds in the last year and I had plenty extra to start with. One
month ago at a check-up my dr mentioned byetta and I decided to give
it a try. I have been really fortunate in having only burps as side
effects, even when I moved up to 10mcg this past weekend. Well at my
check-up today my doc was really amazed. I’m only his second patient
and the first hasn’t responded to byetta at all. I have lost 19
pounds in the last month. I discontinued my Lantus (it was 40u each
night) and only use about 5 units of Novalog with lunch (formerly
about 14 units with every meal). He tried to talk me into turning in

Byetta for Type 1

Sunday, June 8th, 2003

Byetta
is used exclusively for T2s. Symlin can be used by both T1s and T2s.

Here is a repeat of the excerpts and links I had posted:

"BYETTA is the first in a new class of drugs for the treatment of type 2
diabetes called incretin mimetics and exhibits many of the same effects as
the human incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1, secreted
in response to food intake, has multiple effects on the stomach, liver,
pancreas and brain that work in concert to regulate blood sugar."

"Incretin mimetics is a new class of therapeutics for use in the fight
against type 2 diabetes. An incretin mimetic works to mimic the
antidiabetic or glucose-lowering actions of naturally occurring human
hormones called incretins. These actions include stimulating the body’s

Type 1 breakfast

Friday, June 6th, 2003

Byetta is for type 2, Symlin is for Type 1. Both are injectable but
not interchangable.

Type 1 do not have insulin resistance, they have no beta cells and
produce no insulin. It is caused by the body destroying its own cells,
autoimmune disease.

Type 2 Usually have IR, produce insuiln that isnt properly used. Some
say it is caused by obesity, some say genetics, maybe just the luck of
the draw*G*

For Breakfast, I love a slice of bread toasted, low carb if you wish,
with peanut butter and jam for a quick stick with me breakfast.
