newbie :)
Hi.. I’m Anna.
37 year old Type II diabetic, undiagnosed for several years. Finally
diagnosed in 2002. I take oral meds - metformin and starlix.
However, they werent enough and the doctor put me on the Byetta 5mcg
pen in December, then the 10mcg pen on January 20.
The side effects are killing me, particularly the nausea. I was still
experiencing it pretty badly with the 5mcg shot when the dosage was
increased. Now it’s like having morning sickness all over again. I
never actually vomit, but I sure feel like I’m going to - and that
feeling lasts for almost two hours.
When will it stop?? I have lost about 6 lbs so far, which is very
welcome, but it would be nice to be able to eat something without
contemplating its reappearance.

Hi Anna,
Welcome. The nausea in the morning is practically gone. Sometimes I still
get it in the evening. Solutions for me are pretzels and real coke. Or
take a compozine at the same time as you take your shot.
Good luck.

Hi, Anna. One thing I’ve noticed is that when I have experienced nausea,
and thank God I haven’t had it really bad, is when my sugar was too low.
I didn’t realize it until someone else on the list pointed it out. I
checked each time, and it was true each time. So be sure and check if
you start to feel a little sick, and also check about 10 minutes later.
Good luck, and welcome to the list.

Anna, hi and welcome. I assume you are no longer taking starlix? When
you started using metformin, did you have any gastric difficulties?
Where are your numbers now?
I would suggest calling your doctor and going back to a 5mcg pen. When
you no longer have any difficulties at this dosage, you can begin taking
10mcg, still using a 5 pen, once a day and 5mcg for the other shot. The
smaller shot at the time of day when the nausea was worse.
Good luck,

When I started on the metformin, I did have many gastric difficulties that
lasted a couple of weeks - essentially, "dumping syndrome" that was rather
severe. That got better once my body adjusted.
I AM still taking Starlix and metformin together, the same dosage as when I
was first diagnosed. The Byetta pen was in addition to the other meds.
I spoke to my doctor about the side effects and he told me that they are
normal and should calm down within a couple of weeks. I’ve been on the 10mcg
shot since January 20.
I don’t test nearly as frequently as I should. My fasting labs were 230,
which is why the doctor put me on Byetta in the first place. I tested in the
morning a couple of weeks after starting on the Byetta, and was down to 170,
which was a major improvement.
I’m getting more strips today so I can test more frequently.
