Meters

I used to have a One Touch, which died, and am currently using the
Freestyle. I choose the Freestyle because, at the time, it required a
much smaller blood supply than the One Touch. I’m impressed by both.

Any of you who are very happy with your blood glucose meter, will you
please let me know. I have the One Touch Ultra. It’s probably ok,
but I want to be sure I’m using the best out there. Thanks. Kathy, MN

    Hi Kathy,

I have used the One Touch Ultra since I was dx’d in 2002. I test 8 times a
day so I use the tar outta that poor thing and have never had a problem with
bad readings. I’ve tried others, like you, to ‘be sure’ and I’ve always come
back to the One Touch after a very short time. Lifescan is a great company
with very accommodating customer service reps.

I have used many meters since being diagnosed. First I used the
accu-chek active. It was ok. Then I used the Ascensia Contour. I
really liked it, I thought it was better than the Active. I liked the
microfill test strips. Then I used the BD Logic. It was probably my
favorite, but because it is being discontinued and I was getting a new
meter which the strips will be free for me, I switched again. Now I
use the Accu-chek Aviva. I like this one because it shows 7, 14, and
30 day averages. This one is really simple to use.

I did use the One Touch Ultra, battery died and I had a coupon for a new monitor
and got the ACCU-Check, Aviva, I love it, well as much as you can love something
that pokes you. From what I’ve read alot of people don’t change the lancet that
often, I do everytime, habit. Been doing it 5 years, plus they are pretty cheap
for me. This holds 6 needles in one pen so I don’t have to change everytime.

I was quite happy with my one touch ultra, then my insurance changed, and
the new one insisted on sending me a new meter, the one touch ultra 2. And I
really do love it. It keeps averages, and all kind of other stuff I don’t

I used the One Touch Ultra, I hated the darn thing. To complicated, needed to
much blood for a sample. I tried the Freestyle and loved it. The Freestyle
Flash is my favorite, the blood drop is minute, it stores info for 14 days with
    daily averages.

I use a Freestyle Flash and took it with me to my last blood draw at
the Endo - I sis a side-by-side with the lab and came within 2 of
their result. Guess that checks pretty well.

I have a question, for several weeks I’ve kept my BS in the "normal" range,
70-120, somewhere in there. Before I started Byetta (Aug 06) and changed my meds
around my BS ran between 120 an up in the 200’s. I have some major blurry
vision now, it will clear up from time to time but when I have it it’s bad. I
had my eyes checked about 2yrs ago, I had somewhat blurry vision then but they
said everything was fine. I had to get my drivers license renewed today and I
really didn’t think I was going to be able to read line 5. I had to really focus
and blink a few times, and wasn’t sure I get them right, well I did I guess,
cause I got them. I Know you all aren’t doctors but I would like your opinions
if you’ll offer them. I don’t ware glasses, use to when I was younger, I’m 36
    (accck!) as of Wednesday.

    Thank You!

Does anyone have any experience with TrueTrack meters? I just don’t trust
    the one I have
and am wondering if it is giving false readings?

Do you have diabetic retinopathy? Do you have macular edema? Have
you had a dilated retinal exam within the past year by an
opthalmologist (not an optometrist)? How old are you? How long
    have you had diabetes?

When I originally got my BG under control I had a horrible time with
cloudy/blurry vision. After keeping the BG under control for a time it went
    away.
The eye doc told me it was a good thing.

    I’m 65, I have 20/20 vision don’t need prescription glasses, I use magnification

    Diabetes.

I use 4 different LifeScan meters - 2 Onetouch Ultra IIs and 2 Onetouch
Ultrasmarts and they are always just about dead on between each other and
the lab - have tested all four from the same finger stick.

The (can’t remember name) meter that sits atop the strip can -all in one -
is anywhere from 15 - 25 points over actual. I was testing it for use when
I’m out bike riding, etc. NOPE.

I will note that the Rapid A1c tests all SUCK. Get a venus puncture HgbA1c.

This is easier said than done sometimes. The clinic that I go to no
longer does venous A1C. they use an instant test thing. I ask for the
venous and they stated they use the instant because it is more cost
efficient and helps the doctor better work with the patient on a timely
manner. I dont have a lot of choice as they are the clinic that I can
afford to go to with no insurance.

  17. Maureen Hines Says:

Well. I’ll tell you that my experience has been that the Rapids test about
.5 to 1.5 points LOWER than the venus A1c has on me. We use the Rapids as a
quick screen during the visit then send to the lab if it’s high. Next month
I’m going to do a side by side test of venus and 2 Rapids at the same time
    at the point of draw.

Has anyone ever tried to figure out what the cheapest strips are if you pay

  20. Vicki Savanna Says:

"Has anyone ever tried to figure out what the cheapest strips are if you
    pay

It is said the walmart house brand is a little less then half the price for
the same number of strips. Accuracy is said to be similar to other brands.

  21. Adriana Consuela Says:

Walgreens meter and strips are VERY reasonable and
    accurate.

  22. Neva Marjory Says:

"Has anyone ever tried to figure out what the cheapest strips are if
    you pay out of pocket?"

For me the cheapest strips I have found are at Walgreens for their
True Track meter. Initial purchase of strips came with a free meter
(at that time) and the strips now run about 50 cents each - 100 for
    $49.99.

I can get strips from Merck mail order, but do not like the meter
they provide for and they are very stingy with them. So I just buy
the Walgreens strips on my own. The 30 day average the meter gives
me agrees with the A1c test results I just got back.

I’ve done 3 months with the Byetta 5 now. We are going to the 10 next
week and trying that without the Amaryl 4mg a day. I’ve had a few

lows but not more than 4 in the last 3 months. I’m going to be happy
not to take another med. I could stock a pharmacy! LOL I’ll be
picking up a seasick band for the 10 just in case. I have had ZERO
nausea on the 5. Cross your fingers!

I also have rheumatoid arthritis. This has not played well with my
diabetes. Inflammation causes spkes as does the very occasional
prednisone I take for flares. (and I mean VERY occasional)

Thanks to everyone on this board! The support and helpful advice you
give each other has helped me over a rough spot or two, also.

  23. Debra Willene Says:

I got a meter from www.hocks.com and it costs 18.00 per 50 strips. There
is a shipping charge of about 4 dollars. The meter is accurate and
small, takes 9 seconds to read.
