Weight loss

I have a question about the weight loss with Byetta. Someone mentioned that
not only did they get over their nausea but they also stopped losing weight
after a couple of months.

It makes sense that those of you who have nausea and loss of appetite would
lose weight <g>, but are there any of you who didn’t have the nausea and
appetite loss who did lose weight anyway?

Just wondering if the weight loss is related only to the nausea and appetite
loss or if Byetta was actually involved in the weight loss?

Thanks,

Hi, Sherry. I haven’t had hardly any of the nausea to speak of, but I’ve
definitely had the appetite loss. I can only eat about 1/3 what I used
to eat at a meal, and I hardly even have the urge to snack at all
between meals. And as of today (6 weeks on Byetta), I’ve lost 9 pounds.
My clothes definitely fit much looser. I’m happy. :-)

Sherry, I had a little nausea with the first two 5mcg injections. A
little more with the firs two 10mcg injections, but not ennough to be
    bothersome. I’m still losing weight.

I have the nausa after every meal. Starts about 1 hour after eating. I am on
the 10mcg. I also get a miserable headache. I have been steadly loosing
weight. Averaging about 2 pounds a week. Doc thinks that is good especially
since the weight did not come on in 2 months, I cant expect it to come off in 2
mnths. I usually dont eat lunch anymore as the nausa and full feeling last
    until about dinner time.

I have been on Byetta for 6 weeks now and I have lost 18 pounds. I
am very nauseous, but feel that I am losing the weight because the
Byetta is working, not because I am nauseous. I am not throwing up
and my caloric intake hasn’t really changed. Before Byetta I
exercised daily and I haven’t exercised at all since starting it.

I have tried everything to lose weight the past few years and my
body just wouldn’t let go. I have always eaten a healthy diet and
exercised more than the average person and my body has always been
the same weight. This is the first time in 10+ years that I have
    lost weight.

I have said in previous posts that my doc thinks that Byetta was
created especially for me. What he means of course is someone like
me who is insulin resistant. His hopes and mine are that once my

metabolism kicks in that I can be taken off the byetta. I am not
sure how we are going to know I am not insulin resistant anymore?!?!
I see my doc in two weeks and we are going to decide then if I
should stay on the 10 mcg. or go back to 5mcg.

    Have a great day!

Thanks to all of you who responded to my question about weight loss! Sounds
like everything else - it all depends <rbg>

I see a new doc on Monday who has special interest in diabetes and
hypertension - it’ll be interesting to see what changes she might make to my
    meds.

Woo hoo, indeed, for the weight loss. You are the second person recently who
    has had some good loss.

I did for awhile, then gained four pounds, then lost two. I hope to lose the
other two, break the 250 lb barrier and then go further down.

The good news is that despite no weight loss for some time I had a teacher ask
me how much I had lost in the last six months as he realized that he could no
longer recognize me from the back. :)

Congratulations! - that’s exactly how much I lost my first week, too.
I put it down to eating about 1000 calories less than I normally ate
    (probably water, too)

Thanks for the link to the pack. I sent for one for DH and one for me.

I got up this morning and I am back at 250, so my hunch it was water weight is
    probably correct.

My next goal? 249 - just to break that 250 barrier. :)
That will be a real psychological boost!

    Cheers!

  15. Melvin Anh Says:

    Hi Elaine,

I have to really watch my intake. At times Byetta gives me the feeling of being
stuffed 24×7 and at at times I feel fine - then eat and wish I had not. I’ve
had a few nights where sleep was beyond me most of the night due to an over-full
tummy that hurt. There were a couple of times vomiting would have been a
welcome alternative. I do not vomit easily.

I was hungrier with byetta during the 5 mcg phase than in the 10 mcg phase.
That is helpful, generally. I also have more of a tendency to accidentally take
one or two bites to much and pay the price.

I think the hungry/shakey/high BG thing has to do with our bodies not knowing
how to handle even a close to normal BG. Bernstein talks about taking people
from very high readings to the 150’s and how they need to be there for awhile

before taking them down further. Kinda like decompression when coming up from
    the depths of the ocean.

Today I had a 99 two hours after breakfast and I was steady as a rock in terms
of how I felt. Breakfast was 3 pieces of slab bacon pan fried with 2 eggs. I
was overly full so tomorrow I will try 2 pieces of bacon and 1 egg. Some days
the same things are too much and others they are just enough. Moving to a
saucer for a dinner plate helped. :)
I used hoodia regularly all through the 5 mcg pen. I now use it about 1/3 of
the time. I believe John is using it as well, don’t know if anyone else is
using it. If I start having inappropriate hunger that is not tied to my need to
eat I simply take a hoodia. My biggest problems are still around boredom
eating. Little changes in that regard - I just have to learn to keep on
    truckin’.

When I get glum about weight I remind myself this is about lower BG’s first and
foremost. The weight will happen when it happens. It is harder for women than
men anyway, due to the way our metabolic systems work.

Avandia does cause a lot of weight gain for a lot of people and stopping it
helps. You’re right, it may have been stopping the avandia that caused the
abrupt weight gain. Ya know what it is from here on out? Exercise and calorie
cutting. As a bariatric physican I once met said: You’d have to exercise hours
a day to make a difference. All that is left is to radically cut intake. He
was the one who gave me the idea for the 800-1000 cal diet. I didn’t jump
immediately. I started testing and seeing how much I could eat and was shocked
at how little I could eat and GAIN weight. So, here I am, eating very little
and losing very slowly - but the alterantive is gaining, so I’m cool with that.

Dinner tonight: 3 oz hamburger, 5 asparagus stalks, 3 small strawberries, 2
    tbsp low-carb ice cream.

    Cheers!
    Marsha

After walking around for 15 years with blood sugars
over 600 i can really attest to that. if my sugar got
to 200 i felt like i was LOW and i am talking about
feeling like i was 30.pale, sweaty, dizzy, nauseated.
the whole insulin reaction hypoglycemic spiral. then
someone would take my sugar and i would be over 200.
fortunatley my doctor recognized that FOR ME 200 was
hypoglycemic. my body was used to so much higher.
both my weight loss and my blood glucose have dropped
in increments, not in a steady fashion . but rather a
drop and a plateau, a drop and a plateau. allowing for
my body to adjust to the changes

  18. Adeline Calhoun Says:

    Hi Marsha,

Thanks for the positive advice. This eve. after supper, I really had that
pukey feeling. I find that one or two sugarfree Ice Breaker mints really
take the edge off. I should try the self -hypnosis for the nausea. I’m
    sure it would help.

I may try the Hoodia supplement. Since the weather is becoming more
conducive for outdoors, I’m hoping I’ll do more walking.

One thing I did discover through trial and error is that if I use a shorter
needle as opposed to the longer one, I get more of a remaining droplet
leakage on the needle tip, and some on the outside of the injection site.

Time for a shower, bed and self hypnosis. I’ll let ya know the outcome.

    Hugs,
