newbie here
Hi all,
I am new to the list and new to Byetta. I had my first dose last night with my
evening meal and oh my am I nauseous! LOL! I fell asleep on the couch around
8:00…something I would never do, but I just wanted to lay still so the nausea
would go away. I was pretty nauseous all night and woke up this morning with
acid reflux…something I have never experienced before.
Here is the weird thing…even with the nausea I slept better than I have in
months. I didn’t have to get up in the middle of the night to drink water and I
was not sore this morning when I woke up. I feel like I am going to puke, but my
body feels rested and I am not thirsty this morning.
So what can I do for the nausea? Is it going to eventually go away or should I
be treating it with something? I don’t know what is going to happen when I take
my shot this morning. I am putting it off for a little while as I still feel
like I could spew at any moment.
Any and all advice would be appreciated!
Have a great day!

Ask the doctor for an acid reducer, like protonix, which I take. I never
had any nausea. Some others have reported phenergan helps.
However, it will pass.
You can also do only one shot a day for a few days, then add the other.
By now, you will know which time of day is easier for you.
As to the sleep, another prime example of YMMV, it kept me awake - but
then almost everything does.

Thanks for the info, I put a call into my doctor yesterday and will
ask him for an acid reducer when he calls back today. I am feeling
much better with each dose and hope that soon the nausea will
completely go away. Last night, 2 hours after I had my shot, my BG
was 76. I don’t usually run too high, but I am never under 140, so
that was quite a change. Other than nausea, the only other thing
that I am experiencing is a horrible taste in my mouth. Blech!
I also feel I need to go to a dietician. I don’t know when to eat,
what to eat, etc. I eat pretty healthy and stay away from most carbs
as my body won’t tolerate them. I am mainly vegetarian, eating
chicken 3 times a week and stay away from sugar and artificial
sweeteners. My body really lets me know what I can and can’t eat.
Halloween night I had one peanut butter cup and it put me into a
drooling sleep. This was probably good for me since I may have been
tempted to eat more chocolate. LOL!
Last night when my BG was low, I felt so weird and I honestly didn’t
know what to do. I am new at this so I didn’t know if it would
continue to go down or what. My problem is not my BG number, it is
the rate it gets to that number. This is why my doctor felt the
Byetta was perfect for me.
I have been reading the archives and it sounds like I picked the
right list. It is interesting to read everyone’s experiences and
learn more about diabetes and byetta.
Have a great day!

Kat the knitter (we gave two Kats here), you want to eat those foods that
raise your bgs the least. Since carbs are known to raise bgs, you want
to choose them very carefully. Veggie carbs are the best, they give you
lots of nutrients and fiber to help slow down absorption. Well, the
byetta slows down absorption too.
Not all veggies are created equal, winter squash, potatoes, cooked
carrots and other root vegetables should be eaten in small quantities and
you should check after eating to see their effect.
Leaves are all good, cucumber, tomato in moderation, fresh carrot, also
in moderation, cauliflower, broccoli, I think you get the picture. A
carb counter will help you make good choices.
You might be able to find some low carb breads in your area, I know you
can find the low carb tortillas. This will help add variety to your eating.
As to when to eat, eat when you are hungry. For most people that works
out to the standard three meals a day. Watch breakfast, it is very easy
to go high carb and that is usually the time of day most people have the
highest insulin resistance.
A dietitian will be able to teach you about portion sizes; however, most
push the ADA diet, which may be healthy for non-diabetics but is too high
in carb for most of us.
Lastly, your body is not used to numbers in the 70s, but it will adjust.
Right now they may feel like lows, but do not correct until you test.
Unless you feel very bad, do not correct at all until you are in the mid
60s. After two hours, the action of the byetta is waning, so if you eat
something then, it will not be available to lower your bgs.

Kat the knitter? More like Kat the puker. LOL!
So, how long does it take to get used to Byetta? Please, please tell
me 3 days as tomorrow is my 4th. <grin> I don’t know how anyone who
reacts like I am reacting can go to work. I salute you.
Thanks for your advice Helen. I tend to stay away from all carbs
that don’t come from a veggie. As a rule I don’t eat anything white.
Since starting Byetta I don’t want to eat anything at all. I have
absolutely no appetite and nothing sounds good.
Today I bought the sea bands. I would like to say they worked, but
about 30 minutes after I put them on I threw up. Good news…I only
threw up once, bad news….it was in the store. I went from throwing
up in the store to camping out in the bathroom for about an hour.
Is it normal to have such an adverse reaction to Byetta? Is this why
some people experience weight loss? I wouldn’t mind shedding a few
pounds, but not this way.
When should I be concerned?

How about if I just use Kat K? I surely do not want to use Kat P!
This is an extreme reaction, but not unknown. There is a byetta bloggers
list and one or two people *had* to stop taking it because of throwing
up, seemingly for forever.
This is not the reason for the weight loss. What happens, once you are
past the nausea stage, for most people, is you have a sense of fullness
and don’t want your usual amount of food. Less food = weight loss.
Call the doctor. Get something for that nausea, preferably a
suppository, so you don’t have to worry about keeping it down. If this
happens again tomorrow morning, skip the shots over the weekend and start
again when you get the medication from the doctor. Start with one 5mcg
shot a day and after you tolerate that for a week, then go to two.
Now, if 5mcg works well for you, it is not written in stone that you have
to go on to the larger 10mcg dose.
But, one day at a time.
March 1st, 2003 at 10:20 am
I had the same reaction. I still have queasiness at times but I am on the
10mcg. When I was on the 5, the nausea went away after about a
week. Hang in there!

This is good to know Jane. On the Byetta, I feel better in some ways,
but sure don’t like the side effects. If there is a light at the end
of the tunnel, then I can persevere.
Have a great day!

Helen,
This morning I am so tempted not to take my shot because at this
moment I feel pretty good. Maybe I am on an upswing!
I went to the blog that you suggested and got all kinds of interesting
information. I have also been reading the archives on this list. It
has been so helpful to me.
I *am* going to take my meds this morning and see what happens. Each
day I feel a little better so I have hope. When my doctor calls I will
ask him if I can go to one shot a day for a week.
Have a great day and thanks for the advice!

Well the nausea has passed. Thank God! Saturday night my stomach
started bloating. It has gone down a little, but it was so bad
yesterday I couldn’t even come close to zipping up my pants.
The good news is that my blood sugar is staying below 140 AND I am
actually sleeping at night. I am not continually thirsty and I wake up
every morning refreshed. The nausea is just a memory…now to get over
this bloated tummy.
I am hanging in there waiting for the big reward!

Kat,
I just started Byetta too. I’m still in the nausea stage. Has Byetta
helped you lose weight? That’s what I’m hoping for myself!

Sherri,
What day are you on? This is my 6th day.
The only time I weigh myself is at the doctor. I am 5′10" and about
45 pounds overweight. Losing weight would be an added bonus, however
that is not why I am on Byetta. I can tell you that I have weighed
the exact same weight for years - down to the pound. It is
impossible for me to lose weight, but I never gain any either. I eat
healthy and I work out regularly. Who knows, maybe the Byetta will
help with whatever is keeping the weight on my body. You would think
that my weight would fluctuate, even go up…but it is always the
same.
The nausea is just a faded memory now. <grin> I am still bloated,
but feel better than I have felt in months…maybe even years.
What really helped me was reading the archives of this list and the
blog that someone from this list sent to me. I bought the Sea Bands
and they did help. I am also taking Pepcid AC and recently added Gas-
X to the mix. I am just treating symptoms as they arise.
Each day I feel better, so hang in there!

Hi, Sherri.
I’m on 10mcg of Byetta and, yes, it has helped me lose weight. 23#. I am
so happy with this stuff.
Welcome, btw.

That’s great, Janie! I started on Friday and have lost about 2 lbs. That’s
a start! I’m on 5mcg. How long did it take you to lose 23 lbs.?

Below is a link to the Sea Bands…they really did help me. They are
knitted accupressure bands. I wore them for 2 days and not the whole
day. The first day I wasn’t sure if they worked, but the second day I
could tell they worked. I also tried sugar free mints.

Let’s see… I was on 5mcg for 2 weeks, just started my 3rd pen. So, 2
1/2 months. I’m amazed at this Gilly stuff. This weight loss has been
essentially effortless. Previously, to lose 10 pounds in two months, I’d
have to be starving all the time and exercisng a lot. Now I still
exercise, but I’m not hungry. I feel satisfied, like a "normal" person
feels, I guess.

Hi Sherri,
I was wondering how you are doing. I am on my 13th day and the only
side effect that I now have is bloating. What is up with that? Does
anyone else have major bloating?
So, how did everyone react going from 5 to 10 mcg? Did you have the
side effects all over again? I will start 10 mcg in 2 weeks.
Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Kat,
I’m doing fine. I saw the nutritionist today who gave me a menu of item I
can eat. I have bloating too. Not much nausea today though. I’m still at
5mcg. I have to have a colonoscopy on Friday just to rule out other issues.
I’ll be glad when that’s over so that I can see my daughter graduate in
Hawaii!
How are you feeling, Kat?
