Mark - Intro
Hello Group,
I am new tonight but not new to diabetes. I was diagnosed in 1998.
Oral meds worked will for me until about 2 years ago when I started
getting diminishing returns. Endo really pressured to to have
bariatric surgery, but I weighed out the risks and fired the Endo
instead of having the surgery. Have not had any sucess with
sustained weight loss with any diet or exercise program.
Since being on Byetta (still on 5 as I have only been on it for 2
weeks) I have had no urge whatsoever for any in-between meal snacks,
sweets or anything of that nature. My appitite has been greatly
supressed. (I am eating about 1/4 what I used to and much healthier
and am satisfied.) My sugar levels which were way over 200 most of
the time (my last A1C was 9.2) are now in the range of 114 to 140.
My doctor has had little success in getting patients to try Byetta.
So far it has done everything he told me it would do and then some.
Not only has it curbed my very uncontrolled appitite, but for some
unknown reason, it has actually changed what kinds of foods I am
interested in eating. I don’t desire as much meat, and am now more
interested in eating vegetables and fruits. I wonder if anyone else
has had a similar experience?

Hi, Mark, and welcome to the group.
It took me 3 months to get a script for Byetta because my PA didn’t know
anything about it and was reluctant to let me try it. However, I’ve lost
20 pounds and my appetite is greatly diminished. My glucose is looking
good and I’m really happy with it. My PA is now up to speed on the Gila
Monster spit and is willing to put his other diabetic patients on it.

I have a feeling that byetta works better in people who are not tightly
controlled in numbers or food. The results that you report, are the much
the same that I had seen elsewhere.
I started with an A1c of 6, tho I surely would love to be in the lower
5s, and tightly controlled eating. For the most part. Low carbs, small
meals, healthy foods. And, so far, no appetite control or weight loss
with byetta.
My medications, insulin, actos, calcitriol, and my conditions, fibro,
arthritis and diabetic neuropathy, put weight and fluid on me and
preclude exercise for getting it off. That’s why I had high hopes for
byetta. Eating low carb means a diet somewhat high in fat as I eat nuts,
cheeses and LC ice cream. So there is room for calorie decreases, just
no will, and I hoped byetta would supply that.
I have another pen from the endo and will be using 5 units at lunch, 10
at dinner. Perhaps I am a slow starter.
Tho I envy you Mark, I also am happy that you are having good results.
